How to root a samsung moment

EDIT:

Rewriting top of post as "current state" to catch any traffic that hits here.

Custom kernels are a reality - ROMs are on their way. The best forums i've found for updated progress here:
http://www.sdx-developers.com/index.php?board=5.0
http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/rooting/

Zefie appears to be king of the scene - with many others making solid contributions. Poke around a bit and you'll figure out some stuff quickly.

---------------------------------------------------
OLD POST:
I just upgraded from a touch pro to a samsung moment. The hardware specs lured me in; I wanted a HW keyboard and Android, and for a variety of reasons wanted Sprint service.

So...being flash crazy...naturally i'm ready to get root exploited so I can utilize both some programs and custom roms. I'm still not 100% what i'm talking about, but i've been OVERWHELMED with info on the interwebs...and I know and trust this site from my previous HTC 6700/TP experience.

Hoping some folks might have the same background - I'm hoping this might be a good place to start a thread that could get many brains on the same page. If i learn something that gets me closer to root, i'll post here. Hopfully you will too.

So...nothing SPECIFIC to the Moment exactly, but i've found evidence that the galaxy has been rooted, which gives me hope.

EDIT: bundled links proved unsuccessful elsewhere

THESE ARE NO GOOD:
Root Sprint HTC Hero (hit more info in description): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArMO5IHS2eI
T-mobile phone root guides: http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news...android-phone/
Root a Samsung Galaxy: http://www.receptorblog.com/wordpres...amsung-galaxy/

MORE STUFF:
Flashrec: http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec - shows hope, and doesn't seem to be too device specific...just os version specific
Samsung Moment Forums(thx dougm0): http://www.samsungmomentforum.com
Samsung Mobile - Source for Moment?: http://opensource.samsungmobile.com/index.jsp

That's all I got. You any further? Hopefully google will index this page and start driving more traffic of users asking the title question.

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

I'd be willing to test in any way, though I couldn't help in the actual process.

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

I really hope some individuals that have a better understanding of the root process will help with rooting the moment and also post here. I love my moment, but would also love to have 2.0 on it before before next year lol.

Thanks in advance to anyone who post or at least attempts to help with rooting the sprint moment!

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

maybe someone more linux savvy can check into this.

a search on our kernel version 2.6.27 bring up a website with a program for a local root vulnerability.

http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/9545

not sure if it can be compiled for android...

just briefing over that 'sploit, it requires/targets SElinux, the security module (or something to that effect; been a while since i've played in that particular sandbox) for linux. I'm not sure (at all, to be honest) but i don't know for sure that Android uses SElinux or something built off it for their security.

Once again, not sure, but i don't want anyone to get too excited over this. Does seem to be the right direction to head in though.

edit: Yeah, looks like if there is any SElinux support, it's limited at best. see:
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.ph...nhancements.3F

edit again: http://www.tsirogiannis.com/uncatego...-root-exploit/

looks a wee bit more promising. I'm not anywhere I could test it (and i'd need a lot more research to know wtf i'm doing) but seeing as it looks like everyone else is just waiting for somebody else to root this *****, i'mma start looking into it.

*dusts off linux manuals*

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

Stumbled upon supposed samsung behold2 root info. After a few min of googling i couldn't figure out the kernel version on the behold2, so not sure if it cross applies.

Link: http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=214&t=428

I might work on trying the exploit tomorrow....I can't get adb to function right on my home win7 machine for some reason.

EDIT: NM: appears to be false alarm and ripoff of asroot2 and flashrec (foot --> mouth)

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

Call me a pessimist but I am very...pessimistic about anyone getting root on this phone. There are hardly any followers of the tread and not many people even seem to know about it. It's all about the stupid hero. Blech!

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

Actually, I think those that are doing the "hacking" here are focusing on the Droid at the moment. I'm sure we'll get some support once they've got that one out of the way.

I can wait a bit longer, the UPS guy is still a few streets away with our new Moments.

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

I agree that we'll probably be doing some waiting (unless Zetec can do it)....i'm most likely not smart enough to figure out how to do it myself. On the bright side, this thread is now the 2nd link that pops up on google - so i'm hoping that as more people get the phone it will drive traffic here.

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

From what I understand, the exploits that are out for the majority of Android devices have been patched in the Moment. Which is a little bothersome to me, they spent time patching ROOT holes but didn't spend time on getting aGPS working out the door (which HTC did for the Hero).

I am on the fence on picking up the Moment, mainly because I don't know how well it will be supported (i.e. aGPS is borked) and secondly to the wonky keyboard layout.

However, 99.99 bucks at Best Buy is a good deal at the moment... (no pun intended, or maybe it was).
