Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

I'm experimenting again, yeah I know I just can't seem to quit meddiling with things lol.

I noticed that sdx site has some zip file, such as rabbits kernal.zip, joey's kernal.zip and cl14 stock.zip. Can you apply those zips via the recovery console by doing update zip from sd card?
I have recovery 2.0 and I saw that option, just wondered if that's what those zip file were for, or if their somthing else.

Sorry for the late reply. I have only tried Zeife's because it works well and I am not one to break things that already work. However, with that said, I have been looking at user's reports of slightly better battery performance with Joey's kernels and am considering trying his latest this week, time permitting.

Its cool man, I know you're busy, but I flashed Zefie's latest last night, and going to put it to the test throughout the day today, but thanks man, thanks given too.

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

I just wanted to add my thanks to the list. I ended up deciding to flash up from 12.1 to 14.3 of Zeife's kernel, probably more just to say that I did. But this tutorial was spot on and I appreciate it!

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

I just rooted to ZE14. I'm really happy I did this so far.
I have removed bejeweled, amazonmp3, shutdown, some other bs. but I didn't notice, and maybe I missed it, but has anyone removed messaging? (Mms.apk) I didn't like the fact that I had two diff messengers on my phone so I got rid of it. no affect. glad I did it.

can't wait for zefie to root 2.1

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

Yes I am late to the rooting party just got my moment last Friday.
If I root my phone will I still be able to install the new 2.1 update that is coming out sometime in the future, also can I still use market?

I have read several guides on rooting the moment some say to partition the SD drive, yours doesn't, what I haven't seen is anyone post the downside of rooting.

What are the down sides, phone can't be updated any longer through sprint or market? or is that just a rumor?

I am just curious what is gained by rooting, yes there are some stupid sprint apps I want to remove. I want to know what is gained by rooting, by the way yes I use Linux OS, haven't used windows in years so will have to find a copy of windows to install in virtualbox to root the phone to bad no guides to root moment via Linux.

I use 64 bit Linux so would have to virtualbox a 32 bit Linux if a guide was available so doesn't matter I guess.

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

Even if you can't update to 2.1 with a rooted phone, you can always go back to stock CL14 and update to 2.1. You can still use the market or anything else, there really aren't any negatives IMO. Others may feel differently, but I don't.

The positives and benefits to gaining root are all over the forum, in this thread and every other Android thread, just read around and you will come across them.

As long as you can mount your USB on your Linxu host and see it in your VirtualBox Windows XP (or whatever) then you can just follow the root guide.
It's just a matter of Windows XP in VirtualBox to see the phone on your *nix64 host
