Re: Samsung Moment Maintenance Release - CL14

I would think that this won't work with a custom kernel. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the developer types weren't going to update because it would make it harder to root the device. I personally haven't seen much of the custom kernels that really does anything special... it seems they were first to fix some of the battery and meter problems, but if this update does the same thing I don't see any reason not to use the official version.

Re: Samsung Moment Maintenance Release - CL14

I haven't posted here enough to use links so sorry this post will be incomplete. Apparently have to post 10 times and I'm only at 7!

It is possible to use a custom kernel with root after applying this "official" sprint update but it is definitely more difficult.

A few features the custom kernel allows which i like are removing the silly stock sprint apps i will never use, the ability to take off standard stock apps i dont want to use, and adding programs like dropbear which allow me to ssh into my phone.

There is a method, which I prefer to load the important parts of the new "official" update, CL14 system and modem, onto the phone without having to reset the data or mess with the SBL.

Basically if you are running Zefie's custom kernel you ALREADY have CL14. Getting the update from Sprint will basically downgrade back to stock. From what i've heard the updated bootloader makes it hard to flash single elements or custom kernels.

This is not true. If you are running Zefie's custom kernel you do NOT automatically have CL14. The kernel Zefie is using is based on the open source code of CJ05 which Samsung released in Dec 09.

The CL14 update effects, the system, modem, kernel and SBL. Running Ze* kernel only updates the kernel, it will not update a phone loaded with CJ05 system and modem to CL14. There are basically two methods to update a CJ05 phone to CL14: manually through Odin or at a Sprint store.

The Sprint store will update the CJ05 SBL to CL14 SBL which will make updating the phone through Odin more difficult. Requiring the CJ05 SBL be loaded and overwrite the CL14 SBL then use a special patchoob version of the Ze* kernel going forward.

The manual process through Odin allows individual packages to be flashed to the phone instead of flashing the full update. This method allows the "good" parts of the update to be flashed while leaving out the "bad". There are posts on how to update the phone manually through Odin to only apply the "good" CL14 system and modem part of the update without the "bad" SBL part of the update.

Accessing Root and being able to remove the Sprint crap is more then enough reason to use one IMO.

Thanks for the info Joeykrim

Re: Samsung Moment Maintenance Release - CL14

Haha, it's funny you said that, Moxier is the only thing I can't get off as well.

I am on CL14 with the updated Modem, and since I didn't go to Sprint or mess anything up I ams till using the Kernels that aren't OOB....I will see tomorrow how my battery life and everything is in comparison. I am charging it up now so it will full tomorrow AM. Thanks SAShady.

BTW I went back to the dead stock, like I just got it from Sprint CJ05 before I did anything just to start fresh and make sure everything went smoothly. It honestly took me 15 minutes MAX from starting fresh to finish....Easy

I got 48 hours on a single charge with moderate use. The battery life is night and day. They also added an Update Android option under the System Updates menu. So i'm pretty sure 2.1 will be OTA
