Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO

I couldn't agree more Clem2, but if I posted that I would have been crucified here. You're going to get some responses of "but you can get an app to do x, y, z". I don't want to buy apps just for basic functionality I'm used to with the TP2.

But great post. I hope the Evo-fanboys don't jump all over it.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO

Same here TP2 switch to Evo the hard part is getting us to the OS. It so different from WM. But at the same time it rocks. Now you dont have to feel left out about the Dev not make app for the WM. I'm a lover of the phy kb but im getting use to the SWKB.

Sorry i know is off topic but how much did you get for the TP2.

Dont forget to complain to the FCC about the "Premium Data"

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO

I came straight from a tp1 to the evo. I was hating the jump from wm to android after doing so, and was starting to regret it. But in landscape mode the typing is geting better, i got spell corect on, but it doesn't. But have been able to adjust to the screen and how it responds to the touch and typing has gotten faster. Just getting used to the fact of touch over pressure from my tp was hard to get used to. Sometimes when i fumble the phone around it will respond to anywhere i even barley graze it. Still working on that one.

And as I start to use the phone I start finding out some of the other details. Like only 9 speed dials vs. 99 in winmo. The fact that you can't search contacts by company name, period. I don't think that you can even arrange them by last, first. It does not sync with outlook without exchange server, and if you do have that service I believe you need third party software to do it correctly. Basically, the whole contacts part of it totally sux. And you can forget me ever syncing my stuff with any google server. Gmail = donkey guts.

I don't want to sync with gmail or google, forget it, they both totally suck compared with outlook. Not to mention the security concerns with having personal info on their servers. I don't want to take 8 steps backward in this area. Outlook works great and it’s probably the most used client in the world, why would google cut themselves off from those users? It dosent make any sense. Kind of reminds me of apple, which by the way, the iphone syncs with outlook MUCH better than android.

How about the camera taking pics that are too large to mms, probably some setting somewhere that I couldn’t find, another thing I have to figure out how to fix.

The EVO, or android OS simply does not have anywhere near the detail that winmobile has in the areas that are most important to me. I don't think some people realize just how powerful winmobile actually is, or how powerful some of th the programs are that are written for it.

Oh, and I love the argument of "you don't need that option, or, just do it like this, It’s just as good!" This is the answer I seem to get all the time. I don’t want to do it how you do it, I want to do it how I want to do it, it will work better for me.

The EVO with android 2.1 locked up a few times on me to the point where I had to reboot/pull the battery a few times, so don't try saying that winmobile is the buggy one. All the phones I have or have had have been buggy, all of them. Including the Iphone, our family has 2, a 3g and a 3gs, both are buggy sometimes.

Battery life on the EVO was worse than the tp2, because I have the tweaks package put together by Goodthings2life. This is a perfect example on how tweak-able winmobile is.

And as far as it being a snappy phone........ With that processer winmobile would be snapping all over the place too. I can't wait to see it in action.

Yes the large screen makes the software keyboard better than the software kb on the tp2, WAY better. But the hardware kb on the tp2 still blows it away. No question. No hardware kb means that the software kb is taking up half of the screen.... there goes that big screen. And with my big hands it’s still not my choice. The slide out KB on the TP2 is better, period. I didn’t “get used to it”.

The EVO is a nice phone, it really is, but I took it back and picked up my TP2 for now. Hey........ the tp2 has suck parts too. But I'm syncing up with outlook, all of it, perfectly! I have all of my speed dials, all of the detailed tweaks via the registry, use of my entire screen via the slide out kb (which is probably bigger than what’s left over using the software kb on the EVO) etc, etc.

I want a phone that has a powerfull chipset, nice big screen, snappy processer, sync's COMPLETELY with outlook (correctly)………… So, I am going to wait and see what comes down the pike. Maybe that Samsung thing will be more to my liking (if they get the outlook sync thing working).
Theres an app for that. Look in the market for "Gesture Search"...basically you use your finger and write away on the screen...if you put the name of the comapnny somwhere in the contact name it will find it...ive used the app and love it.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO

As a reply to the comment text above. I feel ya on many levels, but some skip me. Everyone and their grandma in phsyc ward knew that android was google device specific. Why buy a google device if you have no intentions of syncing it with your google account when it pretty much requires a synce to work correctly? Using activesync on wmxp works great, syncs your outlook info geat, wmdc on w7 doesn't when you have to BUY outlook. I jumped ship on wm couse as many tp1s i went thru, the keep giving me an other one. 6.5 never made it to tp as an official and i really hate the way wm7 was starting to look. Add the fact that 7 was to be launched almost a year ago and ms dropped the ball on that, and now if we are lucky our new wm7/aka the xbox360/zune phone might be launhed this year if any device maker decides to pick it up the way android is moving forward. I really hate the fact the ms f'ed up and pushed the UD an other year cuz what they had going then would kill android, now they are going with a mp3/gaming device trying to compete with apple. If wm can make a 7 that blows away 5, 6, 6.1, 6.5 or even the crappy 6.5.x system without turning it into a mp3 player ( ipod touch ) slash gaming unit with copy and paste feature and install to sd/rin from sd that looks more like windows then i will jump ship from android. But i got so feed up with stock 6.1, hated 6.5.x and was so not looking forward to 7 that i jumped. Think about it, so did the manufactures. It's either web os, android, or iphone on all new devices. MS had given a good start, but with age comes replacement. Keep up, move forward, or move out of the way.

And I really want to go back to ms..... really cuz you are RIGHT wm is way more responsive, customizable, and powerfull. I do miss it.

I had it sold on Ebay for 350. Its brand new in the box. Still has the plastic on the screen. But the payment never came through after the person "purchased" it. I'm gonna put it back up.

Yaaaaaaaaa those issues kit me right at the core of what i want my phone to do. I guess I will have to wait and hold on to my tp2 for longer.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO

I am extremely on the fence and basically have 10 days to decide if I am going to stick with TP2 or get the EVO. This thread makes me want to switch though. Before now I have been wanting to stick with the TP2 and just wait out til a working dev made android OS was finished for the TP2, but now that I finally got my micro SD card and so far the quality has been subpar then what I expected... I am back to really doubting wanting to keep the phone. I don't have any issue with outlook or any of the things people mentioned in the thread except I really like the TP2's keyboard... It is by far the best keyboard I have ever used coming from BB's, iphone, and ect. I just don't think a physical keyboard is going to be enough of a reason if the TP2 does not effectively give me enough of a reason to not also carry around my ipod. Something I am sure the EVO would do easily.

I was in the same boat. I'll admit, I was VERY apprehensive about switching from the TP2 because of the hardware keyboard.. It was one of the reasons I hated on iPhones, etc. That being said, I dont miss my physical keyboard one bit. With Swype, I dont even go into landscape mode to get a keyboard anymore. I think you'll like the EVO's KB. I love it, and wonder why I stuck with hardware keyboards for so long.
