Re: Sprint Treo 800W...coming July 2008 on Sprint?

No. HTC made the 6xx. Inventec made the 7xx, and Centro. Unless the boxes with inventec tape are telling me wrong. The funny thing is, the hardware defects are across all of the models.

Use your headphones? Hope you love them, because there's a really good chance your headset jack is going to stick and you're going to be forced to use them. (all models from the 600+)

Like actually talking on your phone? Cool, until your mic goes out (700w)

Haven't synced your phone in a while? Whoops, something on your board has gone bad and all that's looking back at you us an Access Powered screen (all Palm OS models, including your beloved Centro)

Even though I've had a 650, 700, and 755, I'm not just basing this on personal experience. I work as a repair tech for Sprint, and Palm devices easily make up 50-60% of my work load (and I'm not pulling a random number here, I've done the math on our tickets.)

Be it from the device simply not booting completely to being stuck in headset mode to random other failures(mics, keyboards, screens), I'm simply over Palm until proven wrong. I hope I am. I hope the 800w is a great device void of any major issues. But Palms track record (I know you say HTC and Inventec are to blame, but I don't see Titans, Apaches, Touchs, or even Harriers coming back constantly with the same issues) has left a bad taste in my mouth.

  • Loud ringers and speakerphone
  • Excellent build quality
FYI, Palm doesn't actually "make" phones, it's the OEMs. Palm just designs them.

Hint: Past Palm devices (650, 700) were made by...wait for it...HTC. (Inventec makes the Centro).

So you are basically saying HTC makes devices with "numerous hardware defects", which is an interesting argument.
HA...that actually explains ALOT.

Hopefully the 800w has nothing to do with HTC.

I'm pretty much in agreement. HTC isn't bad but I'm more iimpressed with Inventec's designs/implementations e.g. Velocity 103/111 are quite nice.

I thought it had already been confirmed that HTC is making the 800w...

Nope, but I know what you are referring to.

There was an article in DigiTimes awhile back saying that Palm (and some others, like iMate) were switching back to HTC for their OEMs. From their some how it was extropolated to mean "HTC is making the Treo 800w" and that meme has spread all over the boards. It's quite inaccurate though.

Interetingly enough, the info was false about iMate--they never did switch and continue to develop their own devices.

Even if true, the article was so vague as to make the info almost useless. It never mentioned the 800w and didn't say anything about a time line (e.g. "starting in 2009...HTC will...") so there is no way to know which, if any, devices they might be making.

So from my point: there has never been any real evidence at all to suggest that Palm is using HTC. It could be true but I'm not very confident in the rumor at this point...

Hmm.. Ok, if it turns out to be a good one, I might have to trade in my touch for a phone that actually wakes up for calls.

Don't mean to butt in here, but given the issues with the Mogul, i think that'd be a fair statement to make. I'm on my 2nd mogul after the vibrator went out on my first one.. now i've got white spots on the screen of not only this one, but every mogul i've had come through the door here at work... not to mention the USB plug issues and i know a few people have had issues with the IR port being super weak, etc etc etc..

Not trying to start an arguement, but i know when i had my treo 755, i had 2 or 3 of them before i got a decent one. As the phones get more complex, they're gonna have more issues, regardless of whose name is on the building they're put together in.

just my 2 cents..
