The Diamond is a good phone its just very different than the 800w; intended for very different uses. If you're really considering it I'd try to makes friends with someone that has one and borrow it for a bit. Or just camp out in the Sprint store for several hours until your familiar with it.

Re: Treo 800w has been giving me problems.. Diamond??
I see a lot of threads in here, about problems with the 800w... what is the general concensus on problems? What are common/unavoidable problems? I know the Diamond/Pro problems, and right now they keep me from using it for business/pleasure use.

What problems with the Diamond/Pro are you talking about? Not saying they don't have problems. I think they do. I was just curious if I was alone in what my issues were.

Re: Treo 800w has been giving me problems.. Diamond??
Well, since you asked, people can't get upset...
Shared Problems: -Poorly designed touchscreen. The borders are insensitive. This causes critical WM components to be hard to use. SIP, start, X/ok, and scrollbars. -Heat/charging/radio issues (Diamond is supposedly worse. Pro Only: -Poor build quality--battery, buttons, d-pad, slider, backlights, spacing, you name it. -Wretchid battery life, (compared to GSM model.) -Intense delay/lag when rotating screen, (to enter a text, or something quick becomes pain in the ***, real quick.) -Crashing in the middle of the night, (making the alarm functions, or emergency-use out-of-the question.) -Battery drains even while plugged in, during normal phone-call use. No BT, WIFI, internet (which isn't possible,) or anything else going on. Not EVERYONE is experiencing these problems, but a lot of people are, and there are quite a few fanboys who brush off the issues, and claim that they aren't a big deal, and find "workarounds." -- for example, people have tried using ice packs to cool the phone. Others leave the keyboard slid open to cool the phone so it doesn't overheat/crash/drain/etc. Others suggest putting under A/C vents... the list goes on, but frankly, I am not here to nurse my phone to health. I love tinkering with Windows Mobile, and I don't think I can ever use another OS, because of who I am, and my job--but the Pro and Diamond just feel like they aren't quite ready for prime time. The guy at the counter who accepted my return said that he was not surprised I was returning it. He said the majority of people who bought it--returned it (the Pro.) To each their own, and some people may not experience ALL of the problems I list--like I did, but you will run into a few major ones, and it's your call if you can deal with it when it occurs. Simply put, we should not have to deal with HTC's design/manufacturing/QC mistakes. --- okay, that's all I will say on the subject, because people are tired of hearing that stuff--even though it's all 100% true... people on this site don't take kindly to anti-HTC stuff... most threads are not only closed, but completely deleted if you start pointing out flaws in the Pro... |

There are problems with some 800w's that require an exchange, but I think the list of design issues that cannot be fixed with a known registry change or existing third party software is short: (1) Battery life: you can optimize power usage, but at some point you just have to deal with the small battery by getting another one, using a higher capacity third party model, getting one or more extra chargers, etc. (2) Not true stand-alone GPS: you need to be on the Sprint network to get your initial satellite fix. (3) Lack of adapters for the (proprietary?) micro-USB connector, such as 3.5mm headphone adapters. (4) Square, high dpi resolution screen incompatible with some software. Now that Samsung is using a 320x320 screen for the Epix/Saga, I suspect developers will view this resolution as more mainstream. (There might be a software workaround for this that shadowboxes older applications, but I haven't seen any.) |

There are over 20 bug and defects and/or problems on the 800W I had listed to myself when comaring with the Touch. Among the 800w problems I had: 1) incoming calls frequently don't ring and often don't register. This is not good for business users. 2) Really bad battery life. 3) Very bad sound quality. I have used both and the handset and speakerphone sound quality on the 800w is even worse than the Touch Pro. 4) Poor sound output into headphones 5) GSP standalone not working at all. It only works as aGPS (assistance from network). The pro has Standalone and aGPS. Palm said they were fixing it and then said they won't. So standalone is disabled on the 800W. 6) Defects such as vertical lines showing up on the screen. I had one where this happened intermittently and one where it kept happening after resets. (Sprint has a support note on this hardware failure). 7) Soft reset bug. You can get lockups with soft resets quite often. Since lots of people do programmed soft resets on scheudle, and the 800w does need frequent soft resets, this is a serious hassle. Hard reset bug. You can get freezes on hard reset. 9) Active synch problems. Palm has tried to fix this but the same problem persists. You often have to cycle the usb several times to get sync. 10) programs/maps losses ability to sort by distance. It works at first, and then stops sorting and soft and hard and soft reset don't fix it. 11) It can go into a weird cycle with stock set up where keypad and screen light up. This will rapidly draining battery in an hour or so if you don't catch it. Other subjective problems include recessed screen which all the professional devices are dropping. It gets dirty and you lose utility in the corners without stylus use. There is also bad quality control with 800w build. I had paint coming off buttons after only a short period of two months. The bug/problem list I had for the 800W goes on but for me it was enough to have me exchange it. |

Sounds like I'll avoid the 800w. My boss already gave me permission to buy the X1 when it comes out.

Not that I'd recommend anyone not get the 800w but if you can get the X1 then by all means go for it. That'd be awesome! |
