Yeah see I couldn't give a crap about smartphone. Personally, I think WM Standard needs to die and Microsoft needs to focus on ONE unified mobile OS instead of splitting their development like they do now.

yup I agree there. one OS for all form factors would be wiser I never really got the gist of having 2 at all. with the onset of the Touch they've shown they can squeeze all the hardware into the same space as a smart-phone device.

WM7 or "Photon", a complete re-write of the OS with a new kernal and CE 6.0 is supposed to finally combine both platforms with a modular, flexible shell, allowing OEMs to make any version they want, basically. The UI changes in 6.1, including built in Threaded SMS, new homescreen setup (Today screen?) as well as greater integration with Exchange 2007 for companies will be a welcomed update for many. OK I have to point out that this is not the WM6 that is on our PPC or XV6700/6800.
This release is strictly for smartphone devices. |

No - this is the list of "compatible" phones that I've seen - AT&T Blackjack II, AT&T Tilt, HTC Advantage, HTC Mogul, HTC Touch, Motorola Q Music 9m, Palm Treo 750, Samsung SCH i760, T-Mobile Wing, Verizon SMT5800, and Verizon XV6800 - sheureka

This is no 100% accurate, however, I have noticed that MS has a tendency of always showing off screenshots of the "Smartphone" edition when releasing new updates.
However, this does not mean anything one way or the other.

I hate to spoil the excitement, but the new Today screen UI wreaks of AT&T Exclusive, much the way that Shadow is exclusive to T-Mobile. Don't bet on seeing it outside of AT&T.
The other features, however, are being widely reported as more-or-less confirmed by Engadget and Gizmodo (among others).
