They were supposed to unify the platforms in WM5 but that didn't happen, however they did become "closer" than before.

WM7 or "Photon", a complete re-write of the OS with a new kernal and CE 6.0 is supposed to finally combine both platforms with a modular, flexible shell, allowing OEMs to make any version they want, basically.

The UI changes in 6.1, including built in Threaded SMS, new homescreen setup (Today screen?) as well as greater integration with Exchange 2007 for companies will be a welcomed update for many.
