so does oc mess the phone up over a long time and the only thing i really wanted out of the update was the animated backgrounds. so if a rom has that and the oc im all for it...i have a bunch of pages of info and started reading my only real stress is starting off....i think ill try it tonight if i can find a good rom

You pretty much need to do three things:

-get the root permissions
-replace the stock recovery program with SPRecovery (which allows you to instal Roms and back up your phone) and also modify files which automatically restore the stock recovery application on reboot.
-install busybox (basically this is a package of essential tools that need to be on your phone in order to do the things rooted users like to do)

Currently the easiest way to do these three things is through droidmod which is available at droidmod.org.

VZW says they're currently testing the OTA... odd. I haven't heard of anyone getting the update.
