Clear this up for me plz

okay, i've flashed my phone to wm6.5 and unlocked the gps since i heard i can use the gps for free, i proceeded to install tomtom7 and got it to work. However I dont have a data plan and when i noticed when the GPS finally locked on to a signal, my phone was connected to its dial-up.

I thought the gps was connected to a totally different service and unlocking it would allow me to use its service for free

or is it too good to be true and its just a stupid misconception i had because im really a cheapskate :P

you need to set it to standalone mode.. then it won't connect to data. also you may want the handy nodata.cab that lets you quickly disable/enable cell data.

but if i set it to standalone mode, will the GPS work??

EDIT: okay okay, i downloaded MoDaCo's nodata.cab and disabled my data transfer and went into the advanced configuration tool and disabled gprs.....TomTom7 still connects....is that a good thing or a bad thing??

Agps is only free with data plan.
gps is free period.

No data cab can be handy.

It will still work,
It just takes longer to work.

aGPS uses the cell towers to help the satellites get a lock
on your position quicker by using the data connection.
I'll post a link to my faq here in a minute after I add how to disable the aGPS and the no data cab.

I meant set gps to standalone.. flightmode would work, although I belive tomtom requires bluetooth to be on (odd quirk of tt)

but there's a cab installer for the registry locations at my faq.

I think this week I'm going to bring it over to ppcgeeks as a general faq and just have it at both locations so I don't keep sending people to xda. plus their servers constantly fail. haha.

do you have total commander or phmregedit installed?
Need to know so I can write a walkthrough

Also, try using the gps, if it still connects, then you're good to go.
It may take longer since there's no aGPS(Data usage)
