Clear this up for me plz

okay, i've flashed my phone to wm6.5 and unlocked the gps since i heard i can use the gps for free, i proceeded to install tomtom7 and got it to work. However I dont have a data plan and when i noticed when the GPS finally locked on to a signal, my phone was connected to its dial-up.

I thought the gps was connected to a totally different service and unlocking it would allow me to use its service for free

or is it too good to be true and its just a stupid misconception i had because im really a cheapskate :P
