Smile Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Does anybody out there have step-by-step instructions on how to connect my Touch to my Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS.

I did it 6 months ago and remember it taking me a long time to figure out--and unfortunately, I didn't write down what I finally ended up doing.

A few days ago a Sprint representative told me I had to upgrade to WM6.1 to fix SprintTV (incidentally, upgrading didn't fix SprintTV).

Anyhow, I'm about to throw both my phone and my Freedom 2000 across the room.

I have got the Bluetooth portion down--that was easy but that's as far as I've made it.

I'm pretty sure my problem is with the Comm Ports in the Blue Tooth Settings and the "External GPS" settings. I've done what I thought was the obvious (matching port number to port number) but that hasn't worked.

Are there any check marks that need to be checked or anything else I might be missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why dont you just use the built in GPS?

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

Since I got this phone about 6 months ago, I was told it didn't have a built-in GPS and can't find any reference to a built-in GPS in the manual. I'm pretty sure the newer Touch phones have built in ones but not mine.

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

They ALL have built in gps, and it works great, not sure what "Rom" (software) you have on yopur phone now and if it supports gps or not but, you should read a little bit and go and use the Unlocker (for flashing new roms (software) onto your phone) and you will be good to go.

Use unlocker 2.31 to enable you to flash with any Roms http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370

Flash with a new official rom to upgrade your "radio" to the newest version.
http://www.htc.com/us/SupportDownloa...cat=2&dl_id=66

Edit out I posted his diamond one, I have a diamond to, but just look in the upgrade for another)

It's all Very easy just spend a little while a few hours should do it, and do a little reading and It will be a breeze....the roms and such are in the "upgrades" forum at the top of the page here.

You are in the right place, a lot of sprint reps know next to nothing about the phones they are selling.

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

Primenall, Thanks for the info--I'm amazed that it's got a GPS but for whatever reason, Sprint--or HTC--chose to lock it. I just dont' get it.

Ok, just so I don't turn my phone into a paper weight, I want to make sure I understand correctly.

Step 1 is to run the "unlocker 2.31." Which, in itself won't make the GPS work but it will allow me to do other ROM upgrades that will let me turn my GPS on.

Step 2 would be to visit the htc link you gave me to make sure I've got the most updated official ROM (http://www.htc.com/us/SupportDownloa...cat=2&dl_id=66)
I've already visited the website and I've already got the most current version that's available. The version, the date and the Radio Version all match. So I'm assuming I can skip Step 2.

STEP 3. Here's where I think I'm confused. Would my next step be to find a ROM upgrade that will unlock my GPS? I saw the link you sent to me by OMJ; however, that upgrade appears to be older than the date of my ROM.

Sorry to be a pain, I just am excited about this and don't want to mess up my phone in the process.

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

Well that htc rom is from Aug 6, all of the custom roms are based off that one or other official releases from other providers.

Just pick any of them that match your carrier and say GPS and you should be fine, look for one with Manila m2d (the interface from the diamond) it's really nice and can be disabled if you don't like, you'll see.

I just suggested that one because I had used it before and OMJ makes nice stable roms, but there are a bunch of good ones out there, you can even download the "kitchen" and make your own, it's very easy as well and fun, just takes a bunch of reading first but it's really easy.

Also most of the roms will have a list of programs they come with, what they look like etc... They pretty much all have the gps tweaks enabled as well as many other tweaks.

So read ALL of the unlocker instructions until you understand them Before doing it and you'll be fine.

Yep you can skip the second step or even flash with a newer rom from a different carrier for a newer "radio" first if you want (I have mine flashed with Bell because it's newer and I'm on sprint.)

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

Primenall,

Another question or two-or three.

Once I've done the unlocker, how do I verify that it's successful. I've seen a few posts that say to check the rainbow screen but can't find anything that tells me how to check the rainbow screen.

The OMJ update appears to be an RAR file--or some extension that I'm not used to using. My options with that are "Find", "Save" or "Cancel." How do I run an RAR file or will something happen automatically?

Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

To get to the "rainbow" screen you have to push all at once and hold top power button, side camera button, and bottom reset hole and it goes to that screen and says what bootloader it is, should say 2.31.

A rar file is just like a zip file, you need to open it, google winrar everything should be inside, so save it to your computer then open it after you have winrar installed.

Just read everything slow until you know you know it, it's really easy once you try it.

That earlier OMJ link was to the diamond rom, just look in the vogue upgrade section for another good rom, I have too many phones LOL

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

Primenall,

Thanks again for all your help. I successfully upgraded to one of OMJ's ROMs this evening--the one specifically for the Touch vs the Diamond. There are still a few glitches that I'm working out but I posted a few questions to OMJ on the same threat where I found the ROM.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Re: Connecting HTC Touch (Sprint) to Freedom 2000 Keychain GPS

No problem, that's probably the same one I have on my touch, and I'm on sprint too.

Have fun It's pretty cool all of the things you can do once you get rid of that stock rom.

I use tom tom 6 with the astrolauncher and I get full locks on my satellites in 10 sec at the most usually.
