Screen turns on between EVDO and 1x

I have an Airave, which is working great, but there is still one problem.
1 bar of EVDO (from the towers) trumps 5 bars of 1x (from the Airave). My EVDO reception is spotty, which is why I have the Airave, so I go between EVDO and 1x all the time.

The problem is when the phone jumps between the two, the screen turns on. I can lock the screen to prevent unwanted button pressing, but having the screen on and off all day can really kill my battery. It’s also annoying because I anticipate a call or text when the screen turns on.

So does anyone know how to prevent the screen in Windows Mobile from turning on between EVDO and 1x (both from Sprint)?
