I had the same problem with my Treo 800w and wife's Q9C. It basically forced me to return the Phones/Airave and cancel my service. Thinking I had a call was annoying, but getting 4 - 6 hours of battery life when barely using the devices was completely unacceptable.
The bad part is that I had to move over to US Cellular. They have a great signal at my house but no EVDO. My battery life is great now though. I kinda wish I had tried the disabling EVDO thing first on Sprint to see if it made a difference.
I occasionally miss EVDO, but always appreciate my new found battery life.
