Try this: go to start > settings > system > external GPS; once there in the "programs" tab, select a com port that programs will use to obtain GPS data [can be any arbitrary port - i have mine get to COM4]

Then run googlemaps go Menu > Options > GPS settings and click on "set manually" and in the drop down box select the com port that you chose above. There's also a way for you to allow Windows to automatically select it, but why do that when you already know that it's COM4.
Then hit Menu > Use GPS and on the upper right corner it should give you the status of locking in sats and how many are active.

Re: Free GPS program

Google sometimes locks in a few minutes, sometimes a LOT of minutes. I recommend the free program: gpstoday http://www.geoterrestrial.com/

I started using it today, and it locks very quick, and is better than google maps. I don't think it even uses data from the net.

Re: Free GPS program

Just remember, If U use the GPS with tha radio off, It is harder to get a lock because U loose the assistance from the cell towers. I just tried it today to confirm this. I cannot get a lock indoors with the radio off. I could easily get a lock wherever with the radio on. Once I'm outside with radio off I get a lock in a few seconds and started navigating. works pretty well. It may be ur location. The GPS chip inside our phone is not as sensitive as the ones with the navigation system. U may want to look on that issue as well.

Re: Free GPS program

when in google maps hit menu then hit use gps thats how you get it to work, if you hit my location you get that message that your phone isn't compatible.
