I usually just leave my (non-PPC) phones charging whenever I'm home. I've got my charger sitting on my desk, and whenever I get home I plug it in, where it stays plugged in until I'm ready to leave the following morning. That means it's probably plugged in for 17 consecutive hours assuming I'm out of the house for 8 hours. I haven't ever had a PPC phone before, but I haven't noticed these practises damaging my regular phones' battery. Based on what I've seen around the net, that isn't a good idea?...

What about using the Touch while it's plugged in (like if I'm sitting at my desk trying out new applications or something)? Is that OK?

What's the best charge point to plug it in? 30% battery power, 10%, etc?

Are there any exceptions to anything above for the first few charges?
Well.. Since when you plug your phone into the computer it starts charging i doubt it would be that harmful to use it while its charging.. i usually text a couple times while mine is charging.. otherwise I charge while its off..
the first time you charge(for about 12 hours.. you do not have to but it sometimes is a good idea).. it should honestly matter but what I would do is let the phone die completely then charge it.. do that atleast 2 times then charge normally
My battery gets real hot to just warn you idk if anyone elses does this... i am taking it in... but yeah.. also just dont always let it die.. my batter is at 20% right now.. im gonna shut it off and charge it up

Re: Anyones battery actualy last a full day?

I did some careful reading about batteries and found a pretty interesting site. If anyone's interested, here are some excerpts from http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-12.htm about charging lithium-ion batteries. Although I'm by no means an expert, I've evaluated to the best of my ability what the important bits mean for us before each quote if you don't want to read it all.

About overcharging: (summary: Simply not possible unless you have a defective and hazardous battery.)

Quote:
Much attention is focused to avoid over-charging and over-discharging. Commercial lithium ion packs contain a protection circuits that limit the charge voltage to 4.30V/cell, 0.10 volts higher than the voltage threshold of the charger. Temperature sensing disconnects the charge if the cell temperature approaches 90°C (194°F), and a mechanical pressure switch on many cells permanently interrupt the current path if a safe pressure threshold is exceeded. Exceptions are made on some spinel (manganese) packs containing one or two small cells.
The fact that overcharge is not possible because the circuit shuts down when the charge is complete means that "supercharging" the battery for that extra little bit of life is impossible, and also that it should be safe to leave the device plugged in all night long (unless of course the battery is faulty and this safety device fails).

About over-discharging: (summary: Letting the battery die completely permanently damages it. For safety, your Touch's battery indicator is not a true representation of the charge remaining in the battery... more on this later.)

Quote:
Extreme low voltage must also be prevented. The safety circuit is designed to cut off the current path if the battery is inadvertently discharged below 2.50V/cell. At this voltage, most circuits render the battery unserviceable and a recharge on a regular charger is not possible.
There are several safeguards to prevent excessive discharge. The equipment protects the battery by cutting off when the cell reaches 2.7 to 3.0V/cell. Battery manufacturers ship the batteries with a 40% charge to allow some self-discharge during storage.

About priming: (summary: Well, this is short and self-explanitory...)

Quote:
Lithium-ion is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge. Stickers instructing to charge the battery for 8 hours or more for the first time may be a leftover from the nickel battery days.

About charge readings and more on priming: (summary:
There is a digital circuit in the battery that acts as a "smart" charge meter. To prevent complete discharge and the resulting damage, this meter reads 0% before the battery is actually dead. This point is when your device powers off. Back to priming... once again, it's fairly pointless.)

Quote:
Unlike nickel and lead-based batteries, a new lithium-ion pack does not need cycling through charging and discharging. Priming will make little difference because the maximum capacity of lithium-ion is available right from the beginning. Neither does a full discharge improve the capacity of a faded pack.
Quote:
The absence of topping and trickle charge also help in simplifying the charger.
The above quotes prove that the technique of waiting until your battery dies, then powering it up a few times to get the battery even lower for a complete recharge is a bad idea. You risk permanent damage to the battery. However...

Quote:
However, a full discharge/charge will reset the digital circuit of a 'smart' battery to improve the state-of-charge estimation

This means that the near-complete drain technique messes around with the smart meter a little bit, since it's an adaptive device. From what I gather, bringing the actual charge of the battery down lower than what the smart meter had previously set to 0% will set the new actual charge as 0% on the smart meter. While this may slightly improve the time your battery can run without a charge, it is not healthy for the battery and will shorten its lifespan.
This post has been thanked 2 times.

Everything you wrote above is true, except for one situation.

The smart battery meter is reset along with the ROM flash.

So in the case where a person flashes a ROM in the late afternoon, and then sets the phone to charge. This fools the smart batary meter into thinking that the batter has a very small capacity.

In order to reset the smart meter, you need to ensure that the battery is discharged to the lowest point that the device will not operate, that is until it turns off. This is still within the safe limits of the 3.0V limit of the battery due to the protection circuit.

And then do a full charge. Doing this will reset the smart circuit and allow it to correctly calculate the actual battery capacity. Sometimes it helps to do this several times, to help build an average time for charging in the smart circuit.

There is no other explanation for battery life going from ~12+ hrs in a day on a full charge to ~2hr life the day following a ROM flash. Especially when you consider that I did the above discharge and got my ~12 hr+ life back with the same ROM.

NEVER manually discharge a Lithium-ion or Lithium-polymer battery by shorting or running them all the way down with a light bulb or resistor unless you want to destroy it or injure yourself.

Re: Anyones battery actualy last a full day?

I have horrible battery life. I think it may be my S2U2 settings... NOT THE PROGRAM.. the program itself is great!

I think some of the settings options are confusing, and I'm unclear as to what all of them do.

Anyway, that's my best guess. It's the one program I have in common with the people complaining about their batteries above.

Re: Anyones battery actualy last a full day?

When I flashed to Dharvey's Black Vista Rom (verizon 2.5) I began having problems with my battery draining fast...I mean right off the wall charger fast, dropping from 100 to 98% almost immediately. Here's a list of things I've done that seem to have remedied the problem up to this point.
1) I've always used Battery Status Advanced to get an accurate reading as well as monitoring any power drain (Ma/Mw)

2) Used Advanced Configuration Tools to Disable Obex & all 5 power management options.

3) Turned off automatic update in HTC Weather (HHC Home Customizer)

4) I have always turned off Gps when not use(This should go without saying)as well as turning location off. (Use BAF Gps Toggle to turn Gps Off)

5) Also this particular Rom has the 1% battery tweak so whenever the battery drops you see every increment instead of Huge drops, so it takes some getting use to.

6) I also make sure my screen is turned off when not in use, but when its on I like my screen nice & bright! I'll sacrifice some Batt power for that.

7) I set my email to be checked automatically once a day (that works for me, but maybe not others, I don't email a whole lot)

Also I've never noticed SU2 causing problems but its possible. I have noticed Wisbar causing a noticeable drain so I don't use it. Maybe I'll try it again to be sure. Now I can text, call, email, surf, use Gps, & generally play with my phone & have 54-59% left at the end of the day. Also I rarely
listen to music on my phone, when I do I'm down to about 40-44%.
If my man I read in an earlier post is getting 5 days off of one charge I'd like to know how.

Re: Anyones battery actualy last a full day?

I have the extended battery purchased for $12 on ebay.
Lasts me 4x as long and takes the same ammount of time to charge.

VERY GOOD INVESTMENT. IMO

i dont know if your a newbie, dont mean to offend if your not, but ALWAYS check to see in connections that the "receive incoming beams" is unchecked (off). Makes a tremendous difference in battery life! LIke I said not to offend anyone, but you know windows, resets, etc! LOL

I'm considering an extended battery too but I don't want to give up using my Monaco Aluminum Case.
And yes I agree, turning off Beam is a good thing.
