Why cook/add applications to OE ROM?

I can understand when one might want to remove a feature or application to the OE ROM, but what is the advantage of including additional applications as part of the ROM package?

If one were to take the OE ROM, install all the desired apps and make the preferred configuration changes, and make a full back up, doesn't this accomplish the same as including the apps in ROM (for recoverability after hard reset)?

It would not be distributable, but for personal use, isn't this better? Since most apps will see regular version upgrades, having apps NOT included in ROM will make it easier to install new versions too (not having to worry about overwriting ROM-based files).

Is there something I don't see or understand? Any related information is helpful.

Thanks.

One thing that is better is when you hard reset your device... all of the apps you Cook in will be there... no need to reinstall .... a back-up takes longer... hard reset then restore back up.... to much time...

Re: Why cook/add applications to OE ROM?

I can spend days customizing my rom so I don't have to customize later after a hard reset which can take hours out of your day.
I have only what I want installed.
If a new version comes out, no prob, create an oem and reflash with other customizations still there.

I don't back up, well, the only thing I back up are text messages and contacts. everything else is "cooked"!

Doesn't everything get copied over to RAM (also flash) on initial boot or hard reset? So either copied from ROM or installed later, don't they occupy the same about of memory?

Thanks.

What I think he was trying to get at is if you customize what is installed into a ROM, there is a potential to have more available RAM.

You also save some flash memory since you are embedding applications into the ROM. It seems to be more efficient than just installing something.

My thoughts exactly! All I have to do after a hard reset is set up my alarms and import my text messages

I was going to start integrating my alert sounds and my ringtones next time to cut back on copy time!

Re: Why cook/add applications to OE ROM?

I think creating and flashing a new ROM every time you want to update an app would be way more painful than updating after a hard reset. Personally, I use spbbackup so I can be up and running in 5 minutes. Give me a clean rom and let me add what I want. I believe that saves more ram than using somebody else's custom rom and having apps in there you might not necessarily want. Yes, I know some of you cook your own so you don't have that problem. But, you would still have to create a new rom every time you update a single app and still have to do some post install customizing.

Re: Why cook/add applications to OE ROM?

How often do you guys hard reset? I find myself reflashing with a new version of the rom about once a month but I don't think I have ever done a hard reset on my device.

After I reflash to a "Clean" rom it takes me about 45 minutes to get back exactly where I was before the flash. I also find my device runs better if I install the apps after the flash instead of cooking them into the ROM. Not sure why, could be the plaebo effect, but it does.
