I think creating and flashing a new ROM every time you want to update an app would be way more painful than updating after a hard reset. Personally, I use spbbackup so I can be up and running in 5 minutes. Give me a clean rom and let me add what I want. I believe that saves more ram than using somebody else's custom rom and having apps in there you might not necessarily want. Yes, I know some of you cook your own so you don't have that problem. But, you would still have to create a new rom every time you update a single app and still have to do some post install customizing.
