i tried sms chat and it doesn't integrate at all with manila. we need a better sms client, similar to the iphone and androids.

I don't know who you mean by "we", but it very much depends on what kind of phone you got and what UI you're running on top of native wm interface. I find SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 better than M2D or M3D, and Vito SMS-Chat integrates fine with it, after you tweak the registry the right
way.

P.S. If I were you I wouldn't get the HTC Hero right now - HTC HD2 (aka Leo) is out on Monday...Personally I think HTC dropped the ball with Leo's camera, leaving a ****ty 5mp with 640x480 camcoder in for such a great superphone, and also NVIDIA Tegra phones are right around the corner - Tegra owns Qualcomm's Snapdragon in every possible way. First Tegra phones are rumored to be released in Q4 2009.
