I think the one on the right is for sale right now on amazon for like $45. Seller is Chi tek... if that's a hint to anything.

Which book? There's a full User Guide PDF on the CD that comes with Touch. On page 173 (167 of 182) it gives this specification:

Card Slot - microSD™ (SD 2.0 compatible)

When you look up "SD 2.0 compatible" you find it means the Touch supports microSD (non-HC) up to 2GB, as well as microSDHC from 4GB through 32GB. You can find a very reasonably priced 8 gig at one of the stores on Amazon, now just $45.16 (plus 6.99 shipping), here:

SanDisc announced the 12 gigger a couple months ago. Have you seen it available for purchase? Where? What price?

Ok you got me! I didn't actually read the book. well I looked but didn't find the information. I saw that information posted here and figured it was as close to canon as could be

I went to sandisk website and the picture of their 8gb microsdhc card is the same as the ones on amazon and the one posted earlier that someone thought might be a knock off.

Said there that basically there wouldn't actually be a release of this cap. just wanted to prove that they could do a 12gb. but if you google sandisk 12gb you can find them for around 175.

I don't know I think for $50 8gb is hard to beat.

Not to clear on this but can you use any mini adapter for the microSDHC card? For some reason I thought you needed a specific adapter.

In part, it says (re SanDisk):
Product-wise, the company made no major announcements at CTIA, but company reps did confirm to us that the previously announced 12GB microSD size will not be released. Instead, this summer the company is going to "jump to the next obvious size," which is 16GB.

Apparently the 12 giggers previously 'available' are all only pre-orders?
