Depends.
If you get a lot of email, then definitely. If you only get some, you'd use much more battery to poll every 30 minutes than wait for the SMS-trigger.
The SMS-trigger is nice since you only connect to the mail server when there is 100% certainty of an awaiting email, where as polling is just blind luck (and POP3 accounts are already inefficient compared to IMAP, so there is a lot more data and processes going on to login and retrieve).
Personally, I'd bite the bullet and just do the "push" method and hope that Sprint gets a better SMS system in the future. You'll still get your emails within 5-20 mins I imagine and save battery life. YMMV.
