Re: Verizon - Official WM 6.1 Update

I wanted to share my success with GPS.

I had a stock Verizon XV6900 phone, upgraded the 'leaked' WM6.1 update. I then installed nothing but the Valhalla legendsgpsserver.cab file. However, I opened the txt file located in the:
<program files/gpsserver folder, and followed the instructions requiring that you download a zip file from the web address given. You then drop the .dll files as specified into the gpsserver folder, then the folders for the programs that you want to use gps for such as google, live search.

I did this. However, i am not 100% dragging these .dll files were even necessary. But, so far:

Live Search picks up location instantly - must set settings for GPS at "GPS Intermediate Driver". I drove around with it and it followed me, so the signal is pretty static.

Google Maps also works the same. Make sure you set GPS options at at "Managed by Windows.

The good news... No need for unlocking or installing radios, or messing with AGPFix settings. Valhalla legends does the trick.

It rocks!

I haven't tried this on any other programs. But I see little reason it can't work as a full fledged GPS now.

I set GPS to com 4, (none), and Manage GPS automatically.

You may notice at work or in a building, it may not get signals. Try it in your car or in a parking lot to avoid unneeded frustration.

Now that I do not have a custom ROM, I installed the Throttle Launcher 9.5 cab file. Its very stable now and with after i installed all my apps from my storage card again, I feel like I HAVE A NEW DEVICE!

Congrats with getting Google Maps and Live Search rocking. Unfortunately apps like TomTom or iGo8 use COM based GPS, so they need to know specifically where your GPS is. I have had no luck getting iGo8 to see my GPS on its own, even though in QPST I know what COM port it is advertised on.

As you can see I am working on a number of combinations. Its a work in progress but keep up the good work.

I've been trying to use various other 3rd part GPS utilities. Currently am just trying Tracky because that supposedly works with the intermediate driver and 6.1. I've been talking with tech support, and they've been very nice and pointed me to the valhalla fix. They don't know if it works on the Touch with the VZW 6.1 and valhalla though, but they thought that it should be able to.

Anyway, I've flashed and let customizations run and ran valhalla. But the only way I could get the satellites to show up in Tracky was to start GMM first. But then the lat and long in Tracky is just random, and changes drastically every second. Closing GMM has no affect. My other 3rd party apps mostly behave exactly the same way. Though I did have one program that worked a little bit (trackpal?), but then the gps data would just freeze up - that was with the original flash and letting customizations run.

I've since reflashed to the VZW 6.1 and this time I didn't let customizations run. I installed valhalla gpsserver. I've done the qpst agps fix, though not sure if that did anything. I've also installed gpsid, which also doesnt seem to add anything. I'm going to try the latest gpsgate in a minute. So far my results since reflashing without customizations is identical to my results when I let them run.

I can't authenticate this but I just have a suspicion that a 2nd flash doesn't do a complete new flash, that may not make sense but I did a 2nd flash and 'attempted' the 'stop customization' (I say attempted because I don't feel it was complete) I was not able to do those apps that are supposed to work when NOT customizing. Hopefully with a few of use testing and scratching our heads we will come up w/ a solution. My goal is to run Tom Tom as well as google maps. leslie

If you dont mind, and can handle the tasks I outlined in my prior post, then I would love to hear it you can get TomTom working. Basically just the follow the bouncing ball and subsitute TomTom for iGo8. What version of GPSGate. I believe you need 2.6.0.303, as this gives you WM GPS input functionality. 2.6.0.280 does not have this option.

Let me know how you are making out.

Steve- just another note here. I have a friend who is won a xv6900 from ebay and wants to update. He was wondering if he could do all the updating etc and have it proven BEFORE activating his phone? I am wondering myself at what point is activating necc. to make all workable? I hope to go ahead with some of your steps later tonight if I don't lose nerve or hear something contrary. thanks leslie

I believe that since the GPS is aGPS, or assisted GPS, that you need to be on the VZW network to help it. This means activation in my humble opinion.

ok thanks. I just came up with what may appear as a dumb inquiry, but that doesn't matter at this point. When I do theXDA aGPS fix I do follow the custom ROM instructions not the Verizon MRI inst. right?

Correct. The aGPS fix is for those that never ran MR1. If you ran MR1, and let customizations run, then you need Skywing's Valhalla cab.

Testing Update and Results

Morning folks and happy turkey day!

Ok I have done the testing I said I would and here are the results. I would like to say that in my testing I did NOT need the aGPS fix at all, and it did nothing to help.

So I started with a fresh ROM flash and I let customizations run. Once my device rebooted I then did *22899 and ensured that my device was on the VZW network properly. I then ensured that my device had Location On and not 911 Only. This is a critical step in that it looks like the ROM flash sets this back to 911 Only.

Next I installed the Valhalla cab and after resetting the device again I then loaded iGo8 to see if I would get a GPS connection. I let iGo8 try to find my GPS COM port, but it was not able to find the COM port. I then installed GPSGate 2.6 and configured the Input at WM GPS and Output as Virtual COM8/NMEA. After a few seconds GPSGate went green, which means that it was received valid GPS and position data. I then fired up iGo8 and what do you know it found my GPS. Be aware I was in the middle of my home when this happened. I then tested the position data coming in and it showed me almost exactly where I was in my home. Next will be a drive and I will be doing that later today.

What I find curious is that iGo8 did NOT find the GPS on COM8, but on COM4, which is where Windows is setup to manage. While I have not had time to prove this I am of the opinion that Valhalla\GPSGate exposes the GPS data to a wider audience than was intended. It is clear that both are needed in order for this to work. Valhalla alone does not get the job done. Next up for me is to look into the Valhalla cab and see where it is dumping the files. I see under Program Files there is a folder called GPSSERVER, but only 2 files are there. The others are somewhere else and I need to find out where they are. I also want to try dumping gpsapi.dll right into the iGo8 directory to see if it will find GPS without GPSGate.

So ladies and gentlemen the Valhalla/GPSGate combo does work for us. Now I want to refine it all.

Thanks,
Steve
