Re: Sprint still having GPS problems? Try this!

I have to say that after all of the "try this to improve GPS" threads that have been floating around, i was skeptical. But, after reading this thread, i figured...whats the worse that could happen?

So, i installed the leaked ROM and let the customizations run. After that, i ran the PPST.exe file. What an immediate difference!

I get over 7 sats consistenly which was rare before the leaked ROM. I also tried to "break" GPS by going into standby while it was running. I woke the phone up, and again was able to get an immediate lock!

Even able to get 5 sats in a friend of mine's basement where i can barely get a cell signal. Previously (past couple of weeks) I never got a lock down there.

So all in all, this is a DEFINITE improvement, my phone does not feel like its got hacked GPS anymore, it feels much more polished.

Oh, and by the way, for anyone curious...i installed a ROM from the kitchen and did NOT run PPST.exe again and still have the same solid performance. It appears (i have no official proof) that the PRI update sticks if you go from the leaked Sprint ROM to a custom kitchen baked ROM.

This one is for real!

Thanks to dew.man for the thread and big thanks to hetaldp for realizing what the missing link for GPS was.

Is anyone able to see what the ppst file does internally?

Re: Sprint still having GPS problems? Try this!

I'm running JD's 6.1 Rom and when I did the PPST update the GPS works better but I started roaming at home where I previously had EVDO. I get EVDO in most other places, but not at my house. I've tried updating the PRL to the 60612 and 60711 with no change. Any ideas on what I can do to get this working again? Thanks.

Re: Sprint still having GPS problems? Try this!

Are you using a Mogul? Are the leaked ROM's still easy to find even though the official one is out?

My GPS works great when in data range (AGPS, I guess), but totally hit or miss elsewhere. In Rio, I've gotten good locks 4-5 times over 3 days, but have had other times where I can't lock after trying for an hour. Sometimes I soft reboot, other times I choose cold or warm starts from the holux software, sometimes I don't run the Holux but just Garmin XT xx.50. I cannot determine any pattern.

I've never used a leaked ROM. Getting through the factory ROM was scary enough. But, I will try as I love having the GPS function in Europe and S. America as well as home in the States.

Presumably, if you aren't with either Altell or Sprint, there isn't a PPST.exe that will help you out.

... in that the cab will install a file that can be used to update the radio, I would presume that they (PPCKitchen authors) would tend to shy away from including it as a selectable item among the other OEMs.

However, if installation of the cab could be tied to the selection of a specific carrier, it might happen. Thus, by selecting a supported carrier from the drop-down-list, the PPCKitchen would silently install the appropriate PPST.exe. Obviously, at the moment, cabs are only available for Sprint or Altell.

A great thought, hetaldp.

Best regards,

Re: Sprint still having GPS problems? Try this!

for those of you who are getting constant locks within 20 seconds or so, please clarify if you are getting the locks directly from google maps, gps viewer, or another app. thanks, as the answer makes all the difference for me before reflashing.

Any app... to get Tom Tom going or Yahoo maps going, I have to open another app working app (ie Googlemaps) to get those going...

Re: Sprint still having GPS problems? Try this!

I betcha' this is a silly question.

I successfully updated to the leaked ROM
I allowed the customizations to take place
I performed a hard reset on the phone, allowing customizations to take place
I then used file manager to navigate to the ppst file in the devce\windows folder.
I tapped it, highlighted and pressed the center button... nothing. It doesn't even look like an application based on the icon next to it. I
So far, no luck using Garmin here in Rio, but not giving up.

Re: Sprint still having GPS problems? Try this!

any other input? i can get the locks quickly, but only if i use gps viewer as a "primer" before launching google maps. otherwise google maps will do the triangulation or gps-a thing, but never really lock. if you are able to lock on google maps in 20 seconds, and can bypass the priming, then i will definitely be flashing soon. any recommendations for other good gps software (not hardware)? last post mentioned yahoo maps. anything with the turn-by-turn directions yet?
