There are several good step-by-step tutorials online, here is a good one.

Reset to default configuration, then configure the repeater mode. When that works the way you like. SAVE that configuration. Then you can switch back and forth by just loading the different saved configurations. |

I would use a USB cable from the phone to a computer and then on the pc use ICS ( internet connection sharing ) to run Ethernet cable to my router. Wala.

yea, ics is the easiest / most reliable, plus it charges.
there are routers out there that will do what you want, but you'll have to spend a bit. seems CradlePoint is the best.
