I think the confusion here is what does Rx Power represent. Does it represent signal strength or sensitivity? By upping the gain we should by definition increase the power of the signal and, if Rx Power represents signal strength, see a stronger RX power in the debug interface. In this case what is being seen is actually a weaker signal (-84dBm).

However, if Rx Power is actually representing Rx sensitivity then I agree that a lower number will pick up a weaker signal (3dB weaker by definition). In this case we have increased "radio sensitivity" by boosting the power of the signal and will pick up weaker signals as indicated by the drop in Rx Power by 3dBm. I wouldn't call that twice as sensitive, but clearly more sensitive.

If the NV_FM_AGC setting is not a 0/1 toggle then I am curious what valid values exist and what they correlate to. Clearly the implication was not that battery life would not be impacted if gain is boosted - rather it was an exploration of why a provider would possibly not enable it by default (as allowing gain to be dynamically adjusted would allow for the best battery by scaling down in areas of strong signal and quality of signal by boosting the signal in areas of low signal - seemingly #1 in both regards for providers).

For what it's worth this was apparently an issue for the Sprint Treo Pro dropping/missing calls (not the GSM version) and was resolved by *upping* the GAIN_OFFSET values all above 3000 from around the values that are being discussed lowering the settings to here. http://treo.discussion.treocentral.c...d.php?t=180933

Re: Nice hack to increase signal strength

Fact not fiction -3 dbm difference is DOUBLE, TWICE AS MUCH since we are dealing with values that are affecting the sensitivity and Q (selectivity) of the radio receiver. and yes it Will affect drainage to your battery nothing gained for free and all modern transceiver equipment has some type of gain control ,whether or not its adjustable by the end user or is solid state locked in by manufacturer and controls itself based on the need and parameters of its operational design. Sorry if I didnt make it clear enough the first time .trying to keep as pedestrian as possible , but trust that your AGC is not turned off and that adjusting these values merely allows that Weak signal to be used and in doing so it takes more amplification to make it useable ...have you ever seen an amplifier that required no current or that gave higher output results as the power supplied to it was decreased , excluding "clipping " situations no because its not a fantasy device.Oh , and the post referenced supports what I already said...

Re: Nice hack to increase signal strength

Thanked OP, my original values were:
NV_C0 = 2283
NV_C1 = 3000

Changed to the values the OP used. Went from no signal in my apartment to the same signal level my girlfriend gets! 2 BARS!!!!! I could actually make calls!

One question, how permanent is this? If I flash my rom or radio do I have to redo this hack?

Re: Nice hack to increase signal strength

So barring battery usage (good or bad) is this hack worth the time and effort of setting up QPST? What I mean is... with the weaker signal being amped up can you still make intelligible sounding calls out?

Re: Nice hack to increase signal strength

I am using windows 7 and i still cannot get QPST to detect the phone. I installed the drivers that are in this thread and my phone does show up in device managaer (as COM4) but when i open QPST it does not list it.. i did try the ##DIAG# ..
EDIT: nevermind lol.. i thought it would automatically show up in QPST, but you need to manually add it..
