For anyone tryting this in Windows 7 QPST will work - you do need the appropriate drivers though.

When you connect in Diag mode it will install the modem driver - however check device manager. You will likely see a Generic Serial device showing up. If that's there you'll need the driver (didn't install automatically or via windows' "search"). I've attached the WModem Installer below (32 and 64 bit).

After installing that it will create the HTC Diagnostic Interface (under Ports COM & LPT) with a new COM. That will be the COM you want to select in QPST and all should then work.

A bit of quantative analysis at least in one instance. You'll see that my defaults were much closer to what the OP ended up at than his were. I tried to keep the adjusted numbers in the same ballpark as the OP.

Defaults:

Code:

NV_C0_BC0_VGA_GAIN_OFFSET_1 Default: 2249
NV_C1_BC0_VGA_GAIN_OFFSET_1 Default: 2994

Altered Values

Code:

NV_C0_BC0_VGA_GAIN_OFFSET_1 Default: 2092
NV_C1_BC0_VGA_GAIN_OFFSET_1 Default: 2494

Readings were taken from a cold boot in the same location on my desk.

I actually saw a bit of a drop in signal strength (2-3 db from -81 or so to -84 or so) with the altered values compared to the default in both 1X and HDR.

Perhaps if my defaults were higher I would see a signal strength increase or possibly more tweaking of the #'s is needed to get a higher signal without increasing battery drain significantly based on my defaults but for this single instance I didn't see an increase in signal strength and went back to the defaults.

So, if you want to give this a shot just make sure you check out the #'s afterwards to get a better grip on the effect of the changes.

Anyone else with some hard #'s after making the change?

sorry for being a noob, but how do you get the phone to connect? when I connect it with USB activesync starts and I do not see the port in windows? I am using vista x64. I am going to try it on another PC, vista x86. thanks.

How about this, I have my port enabled and I am ready to choose the option "READ FRIN PHONE" on the RF NV Manager, but I receive the error,

"NvManager::getNvItemsFromPhone(const string comPort ) - QPSTServer::connectwithComPOrtImpl - Unknow exception throw. Caught in (...) catch block."

I'd love anyone who could help me!!!!

Wow... just wow....

I chose the Comport Configure and chose my port. Then clicked the READ FROM PHONE button and guess what worked!

Pretty basic, I copied the values used from dcperdue's experience.

Subtract 500 from NV_C0_BC0_VGA_GAIN_OFFSET_1 and
Subtract 1100 from NV_C1_BC0_VGA_GAIN_OFFSET_1.

Following in krohnjw's footsteps I followed his experiment and did the same. I have a cradle for my Touch Pro which is stationary on my desk. I did two experiments on mine. I checked right after I changed the values and then once again from a cold boot.

Original Signal:
-93 - -96dbm

After Reset:
-94 - 97dbm

After Altercations:

Before Reset:
-92 - 96dbm

After Reset:
-92 - 96dbm

Not a huge increase, I will continue to tweak these settings and report back! Hope more try this out.

okay, nice hack. I got as far as finding the two listed files and when I highlight the file over on the right section it states "< 2 bytes signed > offset". There is no value in the edit box. Help!!!

If you are going to try more keep an eye on the battery voltage to see the effect of lowering the gain on the actual battery. I am curious to see how much of a quantitative different it makes on battery drain/battery life.
