I agree, I do alot during the customization stage which is why my first boot takes longer. I dont think its a great measurement for OVERALL performance but it is interesting to see. Re: [5/14] Speed test Silence9 vs SilenceX vs Mighty5 vs Juicy7 vs SSK2.0 vs Others!

I have to agree with this poster. I care little how long it takes to hard reset or even soft reset. In some ways a longer first boot means that more is being setup for everyday functioning (like preloading apps, etc.). The main issue is app selection, i.e., phone, weather, contacts, calendar, etc. and launch of those applications. Another area to test is browser and video player speed. This is what we use day in and day out and from minute to minute.

The last thing I want to do is hard reset and I soft reset only if I have to. If the ROM is worth its salt you should not have to soft reset.

That being said, I really appreciate this thread since we have so many options in ROMs and builds and interfaces. Great to have choices.

Excellent thread idea!

I mean dont get me wrong im glad you toke the time to do this, but to call this a speed test is very misleading. The only stat there that deals towards this would be your core benchmark. All your other stats would be really helpful if all we did were hardreset and rest start our phones 24/7 :\.

I have resorted to disabling TF3D and just working with the default desktop for WM6. It's the fastest and most functional option for my situation.

How many of you guys are just using the default WM6 home screen? Have some rom suggestions?

Edit: I'm currently using Sceptre Rom which uses the Point UI front end (it was a little better than TF3D). I have disabled the Point UI and i'm just using WM6 default home screen now.
For a long time I was just using the old Today screen with Ultimate Launch. Not pretty but fast.

TF3D definitely slows down the device but most Custom ROM chefs absolutely love it and have endlessly tweaked it. That is probably why TF3D is still the most popular.

SPB Mobile Shell 3 has recently gained some attention and is more customizable that TF3D but it still slows the device down. That's what I've been trying out recently.

But ultimately I probably will end up going back to the Today screen with UL and Weather panel. I don't have any data to back it up but it just seems faster than either TF3D or MS3.

Would you also test the two Caulkin Roms? Thanks for doing all this testing

Umm yea
1st. Installs fast: umm yea...has absolutely nothing to do with a ROMs performance.

2nd. Boots fast: again has absolutionly nothing to do with a roms performance

3rd. Opens Webpages fast: more has to do with Browser and Version of browser then specs of Rom

4th. Plays Videos without delay: Probable the only thing that could be considred a test of a roms perfrormance.

Tho non of these are really effected by video driver as most likly they are not hardware accelerated. If they are then i concur.

FileSystem: i would suggest finding a large word file and then timing how long each rom takes to open and completly render that file. IMO this would be a much better test then any you are currently using.

3G: Why not use a simple download speed test? Tho your rendering of website test is good but flawed in that not all roms have same browser.

dll...lol which dll's are you referring to?

PS. stock blows :P

You should change the title of the thread to something like ROM performance charts or something like that, since there are so many roms listed now.

scott...your ROM's are great. I've followed you since Mogul days. speaking of which, my son still has a Mogul. Do you have a link to you mogul r4r or do you have it somewhere? I'd like to reload it on his Mogul.

Thx

Philosophical question - what do you call a fast rom?
I do believe that if a chef puts time into optimizing installation/boot sequence/video tuning this will be reflected in overall speed as well.

Quote:

I think they are, at least partially.
Update - see this - http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=57282

This would be somewhat duplicate to video test. Video playback speed depends both on filesystem speed and video driver. Lags in video driver slow down UI as well.

Quote:

I did not want to separate browser version and connection performance on purpose - this way it reflects real world speed better.

Whatever is in boot sequence.
