From what I've learned about DeepFreeze is that anything you do.. even work you save, will be GONE after you reboot!? How do you get around that?

Save all your documents on an external drive (USB or network)

This ^^^. Linux is my primary OS at work and at home and I rarely "sync" it with a computer. I sync it with Google Calendar and Google Address book and do most installs via cabs downloaded directly or to my flash card. Windows Mobile + The Internet have improved to the point where you almost don't need Activesync for much beyond software installs.

I've had countless computers over the last 15+ years and never once been infected by a virus, and haven't had any spyware in about 6 years, and I don't have antivirus installed, either. I also don't use DeepFreeze or anything special. I just use logic to not install crap that's obviously not trustworthy, and I don't use IE for my web browsing.

Special tools are not needed to avoid infections. Just common sense.

i must agree. i myself though look for pirated software often and like you say, common sense will tell you doing so is probably a good way to get a virus. i never use antivirus either..but with the type of things that i do....i've gotten about 20 viruses in my years of using windows. Linux is my primary OS now. Puppy Linux to be exact.

Yes, Yes, and Yes.

As a software/website developer, and general IT consultant, I consider myself a fairly advanced user. Don't let the Windows/Mac users dissuade you. Linux is the most secure, versatile, and lightweight Open Source OS thats NOT on the market. Yes, it may take some time to get your system, configured exactly, but thats part of the fun in Ubuntu. It's YOUR system. If you need help, visit the Ubuntu Forums. Someone will normally reply with a helpful answer in a matter of minutes.

I currently use synCE to transfer files and programs. You can follow my walk-through here. Please let me know your results. I use google sync for calendar. And internet sharing works great through WMWifiRouter. Enjoy, and don't worry about the haters.
