bast...

Just to clarify, I was NOT debating stock speeds against each other. We all know with same processor and plenty of free RAM, they are identical other then the physical differences. I still don't understand why the Sprint at the store was faster, but it was. Maybe I need to hard reset my phone. Maybe the flash didn't take right?

My issues is that I run a lot of apps. My phone runs the same no matter how many I have open UNTIL RAM goes below 20mb. The the phone becomes a brick.

My argument is that while I agree that one phone is not faster then the other in specifications, the extra RAM for a power user like me looks to pay off big.

I would challenge you to load up each phone with idental apps until the VZW phone has less then 20mb of free RAM. I am curious as to whether the Sprint would then begin to shine.

I have applications that I have to run for work. The phone is no faster or slower, no matter how much I load up until the RAM gets below 20mb.

The video is a good demo. Yes the RAM can come in to play at some point but the VZW phone is not anywhere as bad as some would like it to be. Funny thing is I've tried to find a VZW store in NYC that actually has a demo in the store so I could do some playing around with the stock version myself and I have yet to find one. Sprint seems to be much more interested in showing their HTC phones off than Verizon for whatever reason.

sure, I can't argue that you have more headroom with the Sprint Pro. There would come a point, if you loaded up enough stuff, the VZW would probably start to bog first. I say probably, because you still cant ignore the CPU's capability. Open enough apps to where you are using 50+ MB of RAM, or let say you have 100+ MB worth of running apps on the Sprint, you're probably going to ne taxing the CPU enough that you would still notice a big performance hit.

Honestly though, I never really get to that point. Even with several apps open, I have yet to get RAM to go below 20 MB. I'm sure I could, if I opened every single app on the phone, but I never actually use the phone that way, so that's not a good test for me.

Haha, not here. Probably because people Steal from the Sprint Store here.

I believe Verizon has some kind of big contract to sell the bb storm and they basically try to showcase/sell it like crazy. If they carried a touch pro locally it would be considered competition for that I'm sure for browsing shoppers.

It does look like Samsung and BB are getting the display time now. The store where I got my touch last spring no longer has them out. At the time I got it it was the hot thing. I'd still like to play with a XV6850 though just to see what it's really like out of the box.

Interesting possible plus on the verizon TP. I was wanting to get a better understanding of the inner-workings of WinMo when I came across this statement:

Quote:

A "typical" WM5 device will have 64M of RAM. 32M of RAM is very reasonable, especially if the device uses "NOR" ROM (more on that later). Because of the power drain, there are downsides to having "too much" RAM though. And, for that reason, 128M of RAM is unlikely, but may be done for certain "power user" devices

Perhaps there is more to it then just Verizon just being money grubbing stick in the mud buttfaces. :p I can tell you many would rate longer battery life over having an exorbant amount of RAM draining the battery that likely isn't even going to be utilized. As it stands and having a Verizon TP, I can say I'm been very impressed with the battery life and have had no issues with running out of RAM. So in my case, this has worked out well. I don't however know any stats on battery life between the various TP versions.

A follow-up article if you were interested in the info like I am:

Much of the "upgrade" in the Touch Pro was the keyboard. It mimics an actual desktop/notebook keyboard experience, the Verizon version takes away from that completely. Maybe you find the Verizon version better, I really can't argue with that as it's your opinion - but it sure IS gimped from the original version, not to mention the awkward key location (the 'M' key isolated by the up arrow...).

Perhaps I'm incorrect on the slower processor statement (I do recall reading somewhere that this was the case, but maybe that was wrong), but even so, the RAM and keyboard just severely gimps the device overall.

I don't know about everyone else, but I prefer my devices to be as close as possible to how HTC designed them. I don't want a carrier to come in and make so called "enhancements" (yeah right, just ways for them to cut costs, etc.) unless they truly benefit me. I wonder if someone can explain how having LESS RAM benefits them?

I totally agree with your last statement about wanting the phone as close to the HTC design as possible. I have had the Touch Pro on VZW and now I have the Sprint version. I used the stock ROM on both devices with the same minor tweaks. I got my VZW Touch Pro the first week it was out and returned it in 1 week for a Mogul. To me the Mogul was a better device. I was so disappointed that I think I was shell shocked!:???: Overall they did run the same except for the Touch Flo on VZW. It always ran with extreme lag and would sometimes freeze the whole phone and I would have to do a soft-reset. VZW put more unecessary apps on the phone that you could'nt use unless you paid for it. Therefore that's when I ran into the unnecessary RAM issues. I like Sprint version overall because it is the HTC device with some nice Sprint features that I can actually use with the everything plan. You can't say that with VZW version. I fell in love with HTC original specs so therefore I expect the carrier to keep the original specs as close as possible without taking everything away that you originally liked about the device. The Touch Flo is actually nice and I run a app called TFDetacher and it is awesome. I can have my normal Today screen and run Touch Flo at the same time. I got it off of ppcfreeware.com. If anyone is interested in using the TFDetacher I attached the cab file. I hope my post helped.:)

Like what?? (other then VZ Navigator)

I have had both the leaked VZ ROM & the stock Sprint ROM in my TP's at one time or another & IMHO the stock Sprint ROM has WAY more unnecessary bloatware then the VZ ROM??
