It's kinda funny, I actually prefer the VZ KB myself (although I never use the hardware KB) I think the Sprint KB keys are too small & too stiff to really work well. Since I find that I can type MUCH faster using Touchpal in T+, I don't really care about the KB (I'm so glad I took the time to learn the ins/outs of TouchPal)

I didn't buy the TP for the KB (if I could buy a Diamond that had all the TP features EXCEPT the KB, I would buy it today)

I can't believe people make such a big deal out of the "crippled" VZ KB myself, every PPC KB takes some getting used to as they are all slightly different. I have had a lot of phones with sort of oddball KB's (things like the spacebar all the way to one side etc etc) & they all work just fine after a little practice. This statement cracks me up "Much of the "upgrade" in the Touch Pro was the keyboard. It mimics an actual desktop/notebook keyboard experience" Give me a break, mimic an actual desktop on a 3" long KB?? How the hell do you touch type 160 WPM on that??

I am not defending VZ by the way, I do think they are pretty cheap to make some of the changes they do. That being said, the VZ phone works just fine if it's set up right. My co-worker's VZ phone running SSK 1.5 runs pretty much the same as my Sprint model converted the VZ service (it's certainly not a "lot slower")

Which build OS and XIP versions? Note that I did specifically say, this is with any build that has been tweaked by FormerPalmOS, which I believe are only builds 21109, 20954, and 21015. SSK is one of the few kitchens (if not the only one) that I know of that gives you a whole slew of OS choices (I believe there are eight now?) so for you to compare performance and say you are on the same kitchen doesn't mean a whole lot.

I am on build 20954 and yes, every time I open the Windows folder in File Explorer, it opens in no more than 2 seconds. And when I open the keyboard, it rotates in less than a second, EXCEPT my Weatherpanel plugin, which usually does take a couple seconds to pop back up after rotating (there will just be a blank area until it repopulates). Someone want me to take a video of this? I will be glad to take the video if someone will host it or upload it to a site for me.

And I agree with Jmorton, I like the feel of the keys on the VZW keyboard better, and I'm already used to the layout. I type 90% of my forum posts here, on my Touch Pro. And anyone who knows me knows I tend to type fairly long posts ;) I also agree that I could go w/o the hardware keyboard entirely if need be, and had HTC made a Diamond that had a camera flash and SDHC slot that I could have hacked to work on VZW, I'd have been all over that. I use the standard HTC on screen keyboards (usually the "Sure Type" 20 key) with T9 turned on and can type pretty quickly and comfortably.

I have tried all of them...same result. I tried all the cooked ROM's and now I've been cooking my own with SSK1.5. Currently I'm using Former's 21018xip-sys he made to work with Scott's kitchen.

Sorry but I'm able to reach _at least_ 50 WPM on the TP keyboard and can type just fine without even looking. That's pretty damn close to desktop for me, maybe not as fast but I don't have to actually look at the keys at all.

I'll bet you could do the same thing on a VZ KB with a little practice (I know I could)

Well, again, I'd be happy to take a short video of my VZW TP running SSK 1.5/build 20954 with FormerPalm's tweaked XIP, opening the Windows folder in File Explorer (with Show All Files checked), in no more than two seconds.

I will also demonstrate the keyboard being opened any my screen rotating in about one second, with the exception of my Weatherpanel today plugin which takes another second or two to pop back up.

I just remebered that you can attach files directly to posts here... I will do what I can to keep the filesize small and post the vid here.

Re: From Verizon Touch Pro to Sprint version... is it really that much better?

Alright! I decided to bite the bullet and upload my first ever Youtube video

First, let me apologize that a) the video is not the greatest quality. I set the camera to Macro mode but it still was not too happy about shooting something so small/close, and b) that the video is sideways. The camera has an accelorometer that usually compensates for the angle that I hold it at, but it didn't correct for this, and I couldn't find any option in the video editing software I use to rotate the vid.

Still, you can more or less clearly see that:

- My phone boots with 70.7 MB free, with TF3D disabled, but several other today plug ins and S2U2 running (if I disable all today plug ins and S2U2 I can get very close to 80 MB free, and with TF3D enabled I boot with about 60 MB free)

- I am running a 20954 build/sys

- Opening the Windows folder in File Explorer takes between one and two seconds

- Upon sliding the keyboard out or back in, screen rotation takes less than one second (save for the Weatherpanel plug in which takes a couple extra seconds to pop back up, due to the animated skin I use).

Makes it kinda hard to feel like I have a gimped device.....

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmOsnfqtRWQ

FWIW, I have tried other roms, Juicy's 4.7, Juicy 5, MightyRom, a couple others, and NONE of them booted with this much free RAM, nor opened folders that quickly, nor rotated the screen that quickly. I keep going back to this SSK custom rom.... rediculously fast, and the only rom I can run for DAYS without a soft reset.

wow.... seriously?? Did I waste all that time taking and uploading that video?

Nice job, I think a lot of sprint fanatics don't want to admit how well the VZ phone can actually work.

Re: From Verizon Touch Pro to Sprint version... is it really that much better?

Friend of mine at work with the Sprint TP, who I usually compare to, has been through a few roms. My VZW Pro has always matched or exceeded his in overall speed.

He is currently running the Silence rom, and it takes him about 5 seconds to open \Windows\

Rotating into landscape takes a bit longer than mine as well....

Sure does have a ton of free RAM though! ;-)
