I swore I thought I saw the Sprint HTC Touch Pro Best Buy advert say it was black trim, so I thought they had that available. If it isn't, that's good - I don't have to lust after something that doesn't exist.

Re: Touch Pro - 1/9/09 Build Date

Just to add to the post here... I just swapped mine out yesterday because one of my LED lights went out on the "D-Pad". My manufacturer date is 12/11/08 and everything is amazing on it. Sound quality in the earpiece is perfect, and the fit and finish of the phone is perfect. I think I read somewhere that anything made from mid November and later had all the corrections on the phones.

Good luck.

I don't know about the previous build dates, but mine is 11/7/08 and says Hardware Version: 002

Well, I had Sprint exchange my second launch Touch Pro (swapped once already due to the over-b***** earpiece) which had a mid-October build date yesterday, because the right side of the screen was peeling away from the bezel. It had slowly been getting worse and worse, and I was starting to worry that the screen might let go completely on the right side. Additionally, the hardware nav buttons stuck up quite a bit (over 1mm even with a screen protector on!), and the hardware keyboard's backlight (as all of you know) was terribly inconsistent.

The new phone is amazing. The hardware buttons sit almost flush. The screen is perfectly flush with the bezel. The keyboard backlight is perfectly uniform! Even the slider mechanism seems snappier and more reliable.

If you're on Sprint and have been been holding out for the kinks to get worked out, I would say the time has arrived!
I have a 12/26/08 and can report the same things. The hardware keys do appear flush, and if not, its so minuscule that I cant really tell. Screen is great and bright white, KB back light works well, etc.

I think most problems with the TP's can be attributed to early batches, and even then I believe they have been overstated. 3-4 noisy reports of an isolated defect on a message board can end up tainting impressions of a batch of thousands of otherwise perfect TP's (and this happens). I can only imagine what a nightmare we PPCGeeks are to Sprint Tech people. My friend has a TP that was built in early Nov. and it is perfect like mine.

People are going crazy with replacements and stuff right now. If there is a flood of TP replacements for perfectly good TP's and Mogul I think we will all pay in the long run when Sprint becomes more like VZW and makes it much harder to get replacement hardware when you do have a 100% legitimate complaint. Slight differences in batches are normal (and were with the mogul as well) and do not necessarily mean one is inferior. It wouldn't matter to me if the hardware buttons sat a tiny bit above the screen if it worked how it was supposed to. WE ALL need to be careful when creating these impressions of possible inferiority between batches. This is normal and expected with almost all electronics like this - the key is that they all work equally well.

Re: Touch Pro - 1/9/09 Build Date

everything is subjective... my friend just got a TP with a build date of 1-9-09 and she is complaining about the volume... I haven't had a chance to do a side by side comparison of our phones yet

My volume was a bit low but this is EASILY fixable. I used volume tweaks and adjusted to my liking. One thing I would recommend to even the most novice user who wants to keep everything pretty much stock is to apply GoodThings2Life's Touch Pro Cleanup *Tweaks Only* .cab which applies many common tweaks such as sent text notification and volume.

That is true, when I got my first one from BB on launch day. I thought it was gonna be black. Nope what they call black is the front of the phone. The buttons and screen frame.

Re: Touch Pro - 1/9/09 Build Date

I'm taking mine in for replacement today. Build date 11/7/2008. Reasons are:

Raised Home/Talk keys.
Volume Up button has no tactile feedback
Keyboard backlight is uneven and very dark on the lower left side
Overheats and stops charging battery when on call or using data
Squeaky cover
Stylus switch intermittent

I'm going to ask them to pull one from their most recent shipment and hope to get a very recent build date. Sounds like there's been some positive quality improvements.

Wish me luck!

You will probably get 3 of those issues fixed with the new phone, maybe 4/5.
The heat issue is still present in all builds.
The squeaky battery cover MAY be fixed, but you can fix it with painter's tape
The keyboard backlight MAY be more even as some users have reported
But your stylus switch, talk keys, and volume key issues should be resolved.
