As previously stated throughout this thread, no matter if it is conditional or unconditional, Sprint charges $.20/minute. No way around it. You were misinformed.

Just got off the phone for the 3rd time with sprint. Per the supervisor can't change voicemail number only forward and @.20 per minute.

It is the same thing as your sprint voicemail, they just have to change the number. Your voicemail does this very same thing, do you get charged for it?

I believe clearly stated that you have to have them change the default voice mail number to 813-200-0200, the rep I talked to did not have a problem doing this, neither did the second rep when I called back to confirm the settings were correct....
I stated it the way I did because I wanted to translate the terms as easily as possibly to you guys and the sprint reps...

What happens on Sprints side is that they have to delete your default sprint voicemail service and they have to set up a new one.(don't worry because they can just redo it if you don't like it, I asked). Then they have to set up a new one going to the # 813-200-0200, when they do that, they have some options called No answer, Busy, and Unavailable, these have to all be set to Conditional because if they aren't then as you said, they will be automatically forwarded to that number, and for that you will get charged.
Don't ask me how, because I understand it is technically doing the same thing after it goes through Busy, unavailable ect....but something in there system recognizes that that is for voicemail and you DO NOT GET CHARGED...

SO yes this IS FREE AS LONG AS YOU Have it set up correctly!!!
However, try this at your own risk, it is free for me and many others who have set it up correctly, and even if they somehow mess it up, the most it is not like the charges are going to be outrageous, just make sure you call tem, have it credited back and then fix it.

Well I guess it's true when they say some guys have all the luck.

I just got off the phone with sprint every time I call I get the same response my voice mail # cannot be deleted I would have to change my number.
The Tech who goes by the name Chris said that the vmail# is the same as the phone # and there is nothing he can do. they can foward my vmail but thats about it.

Maybe the reason why you dont see any charges is because of your plan?

Re: How To: Set Up Visual Voicemail on your Sprint TP for Free

Nah...the people who got this working without being charged had 2 things going for them to make it happen. A rep who knew exactly what they were talking about, and also either didn't know/care about the policy of not changing the default vm number. Not much point in furthering this discussion. I think until Sprint changes the policy, it's going to be a repeat of information already posted.

I have followed the instructions laid out in this thread and have hit a snag. When you call my phone you get a message stating the 813 # and then it says that this is an invalid voicemail account. Can someone tell me what I did wrong?

how much on average are people getting charged in total

Hafrust 01-20-2009 06:16 PM

Re: How To: Set Up Visual Voicemail on your Sprint TP for Free

That depends on how many calls were forwarded to voicemail. No way to get a real average b/c everyone has different usage. $.20/minute.

as a warning to all. the OP statement about call forwarding is wrong, you will be charged. you can look it up on thier website. actually in the same place he found his quote, this is quoted "
Call forwarding charges apply, except in the case of Sprint Nextel voicemail or SMS numbers. "

this means if you aren't supposed to do it, you shouldn't and this is what happens.

The reason people like me aren't getting charged is because its not actually forwarding. People who set this up when the op did (which was before he even posted this on ppcgeeks) sprint would actually change our voicemail numbers for us. Now when you try to call in and have them do that they won't change the # at all and only set it up as forwarding. I tried to have my girls phone set up like mine and I ran into the same problems as everyone else, they won't change voicemail numbers anymore.

Exactly, as others have said it seems sprint has sent a memo out to there reps saying that they are not supposed to do this anymore, it did work but now that so many have tried it it seems that it doesn't anymore, maybe this thread should be closed....

Nah...might as well keep it open. There's a lot of good information throughout this thread, and if it closes someone else will inevitably open up another one. Personally, I think this one should remain open and all other threads regarding the matter be pointed here. Who knows, if people lay off of these requests and wait a month or two, they might start seeing success in getting it done. Most call centers go through employees like toilet paper, so just because people are in the know about the policy now doesn't mean they will be in a couple months.

Yeah, plus PhoneFusion might have an update by then, LOL....
They just released one for the android so I e-mailed them to see if they had one planned for windows mobile devices soon, they said....
"We do not have an update for Windows Mobile available.

There is no firm date for a future release.
"
O well....

Re: How To: Set Up Visual Voicemail on your Sprint TP for Free

I just called and Cliff (the sprint employee) told me that he is changing the voicemail number and that it is set to conditional forwarding. this sounds exactly like what everybody said should happen if it is setup correctly. however, he did say that he was told that he must tell me (and document that he told me) that it will cost me $.20/minute. I wasnt sure if he was told incorrectly or not, so i decided to let him make the change and i will turn it off if i see charges.

He actually said he had multiple calls about this tonight alone, even knew the number i wanted to change the voicemail to before i told him. So i am sure that sprint is aware that this is going on.

He called and left me a voicemail, so if anybody can tell me how to check up to the minute billing (if this is possible, i see on the website how to check minutes, but i do not see anywhere about call forwarding billing), i can verify if i was charged for this voicemail

No, you didn't read everything in this thread. To avoid being charged, you do NOT want conditional call forwarding set up. That will result in the $.20/min charge.

Re: How To: Set Up Visual Voicemail on your Sprint TP for Free

Hmmm, I had read pages 1-7, and then 17 and 18 (it got to be rather redundant so i skipped a lot of the middle). maybe I should go back and read the rest, but from what i read, i believe i did what people were saying needed to be done in the early posts. I have conditional forwarding. he confirmed that i was changing my voicemail number.

Does anybody know how to check if I actually am being charged for this? is there a place where i could look up this kind of fee in real time on my account?

Also, is there a way to limit voicemail time? I am worried that i might get the situation where someone calls me and is leaving a message when i call them back and they switch over and it leaves a voicemail the whole time im on the phone which could end up in an hour+ voicemail if im on the phone that long. I think that's the only way i could get really screwed with a huge bill.

Took a few attempts with sprint and being told no a couple times but, I finally got them to set this up as described in the first post. It works pretty good too. Yet to see if sprint will charge me anyway. we shall see.

well, I've been using GotVoice for this since it calls into the vm, no fwding required. they did however just merge with YouMail, so now it's $3/mo if you can't fwd. not great, but atleast I don't have to have another app running and it's better than .20/min.

Re: How To: Set Up Visual Voicemail on your Sprint TP for Free

I woudnt want another app to give me Visual Voicemail. That is P.I.T.A. Wht I cant understand is that Sprint spent a ton of money advertising the and helping to develop the the TP and Diamond. If they rewrote the softare (so to speak) to give the Instinct Visual Voicemail, why the hell didnt they do it for WM phones, which out sell the Instinct?

with phone fusion it doesn't run in the backround. when you go to running programs phonefusion will not be there. When you get a voicemail phonefusion automatically opens up.

Is this a visual voicemail program, it sounds like they send a text with the words, or the mp3 file with the voicemail goes to your email, but it doesn't seem like actual visual voicemail, can we get some screen shots?

shaggylive 01-23-2009 07:45 PM

Re: How To: Set Up Visual Voicemail on your Sprint TP for Free

no screen shots, with the switch to YouMail, I have to pay 3/mo and I haven't set it up yet. when it was gotvoice (free version) it would only check like 3 times a day, and you had to listen via web page. it would just send a txt &or email notification.
but yes, with youmail it should send the mp3 in email, and you can have it translated to text for a few more bucks.
I don't have any idea what "visual voicemail" is like, I'm allergic to apples

Finally got the Visual Voice Mail thing going, the tech that I spoke to said that it wasn't free because PhoneFusion charges Sprint $0.20 a call and they pass that on to the customer, I'll see what happens after my first billing cycle!!! Thanks for the great hint on getting visual mail, much better feature than calling everytime to check your voice mail just so you can hear someone say "Call me back" DUH!

He said no problem, put me on hold for 4 min, then asked for the new number, then over the next 10 min he repeatedly "tested" it by calling me and he couldn't get it to work (still answered by SprintVM). He wanted me to reset my phone, but I was on it, so he said "oh, thats why it isn't updating. If it doesn't work after you hang up, call back when you are on a land line." (He obviously didn't know what he was doing -lol)

#2 Call:
Said I want to change "Default Voicemail". He said "no problem" and immediatly asked for the new number. Put me on hold for 1 min, then said his supervisor said they can't do that because it circumvents their $0.20/min forwarding charge. I said the other guy tried to do it and asked what it was currently set to. It was 11+my-phone-number still, so the first tech didn't change a thing. (???)

#3 Call:
Said I want to change "Default Voicemail in your ESM system". They guy said no problem and immediatly asked for the new number. Put me on hold for 1 min, then said "I can't change the default voicemail, I can only change conditional or unconditional" (did not mention the word "forwarding" or any charge). I said "conditional I guess, but I was told to have you change the default". He said "sorry, I can only change conditional." I said "ok", and 30-seconds later he said "done, is there anything else I can help you with?" I said "nope, thanks" and hung up.

I hope I don't get charged. If I do, I can honestly say the tech said absolutly nothing about any charge or even the word "forwarding". We will see.

I think I will though, because it is not the default. The "default voicemail" is not called conditional or unconditional... it is a 3rd type... right?

Anyway, it's working and I love it. I set the Home-Tab left softkey to "Voicemail" and had it run the app instead of "Phone" which is the same as pressing the hardware talk key. I hope I don't get charged.

PS: I'd love it more if...
1) It showed contact name and picture, plus had an internal player with progress bar instead of launching Windows Media Player Mobile
...does any one know how to make it at least launch a different player?

or 2) It just forwarded to GMail and I could some how tell the phone to only auto-download attachments from FVM.

or 3) It just simply sent an MMS with the voice mail from the callers number. That would be awesome!

FYI: I got charged. I turned it off. They are telling me no matter what you get charged. Are there really people that have had this working for 2 months with no charges? :(

This Is No Longer Free

The idea of this working is pretty much DEAD! I've spent the last week, calling in and trying every conceivable idea to make the forwarding work without charges to no avail. my latest try was to actually change the Voicemail Default number...which was my own number at the time to the Phonefusion.com number(i spoke to at least 6 reps before i found one to do this!). great service and it worked great with Youmail.com, callwave.com, and phonefusion.com, but with the forwarding charges I was getting billed anywhere from $3-10 per day! YIKES. this is a serious flaw to sprint service for all of us technical users out there but I think sprint doesn't really care since the general population don't really care(or know) about services like these. Sorry to be so doom and gloom, I hate it too since I'm a new sprint dealer and I just switched from AT&T. I now save $59/mth so if I wanted I could probably just pay the forwarding fees to sprint and be about the same as AT&T but I switched to save money! I will be getting a dealer account soon also so then I will save even more money.
Please if anyone has the silver bullet to solve this PM me and let me know otherwise I think the thread should be either closed or re-titled to NOT WORKING ANYMORE! or IF YOUR NOT ALREADY IN THE PROGRAM DON'T TRY CAUSE SPRINT CAUGHT ON AND IS NOW CHARGING.

Unfortunatley YES, by the end of the day' sometimes i have around 30-40 vm's. i use my phone for business, and i'm self employed so i use around 5000 minutes per month, usually during the day time and then a few 1000 more during nightime and weekends(i need to start using my VOIP line more often).
Sprint really just needs to get with the program and in-order to stay competetive they need to change this. there are no other carrier that charge this...even Helio by Virgin Mobile who uses sprint towers doesn't charge for forwarding.
If Sprint wants business users they need to make forwarding free or they are going to slowy loose them 1 by 1. also as people begin to use cellphones as there home phones they are going to start comparing features, and Forwarding for pretty much every Landline is also free! anyway's not trying to persuade anyone eitherway, believe me i want people to use sprint...but when pitching business' about the service forwarding always seems to come up with me.

Re: How To: Set Up Visual Voicemail on your Sprint TP for Free

just putting in my 2 cents. I am a sprint tier 2 tech btw and when I heard about youmail I actually went into the system and changed my own vm number. It did not work. I was still charged. I'm willing to try again with fusion, but I don't doubt it will be the same deal. Lots of time people slide by in the system with features they're not supposed to have. So if one or two people in 100 make it work, again I would not be suprised.

I asked to be escalated to retentions because i was assured by tech teir 2 that I would NOT be charged extra for the service. Retentions credited me the 63 dollars back (only because she said i was given bad "information" but said (paraphrasing) Sprint is no longer respondsible for call forwarding fees and that call forwarding OF ANY KIND incurs a 20 cents per minute and 20 cent minimum charge per call...and then asked if i agreed and understood. I argued (for about an hour) quoting the call forwarding rules posted on their site. I argued some more. I lost. They reverted to sprint vm. This sucks. Check your bill.

btw have sprint simply everything 99 with tep on two lines (their most expensive plans I'm aware of) they didn't care .

I agree with this 100%. I always enjoyed the various enhanced voicemail services. When I first changed to Sprint from GSM I followed all directions and spent about two hours with various Sprint reps until I was all forwarded on voicemail and assured it would not cost extra. One month later I had an extra $100.00 bill for the forwarding and when I disputed it there were no notes saying I would not be charged, but I eventually got a partial discount. I then tried calling again and redoing the whole thing, this time recording the call, and was told there would be charged for call forwarding if this was enabled. I immediately cancelled my account and went back to gsm/free forwarding. To me this is Sprint biggest downfall as their network, pricing, and phones are all pretty good. I wish they would allow free call forwarding like everyone else.

You shouldn't want the program to stay open all the time, you should only want it to open up when you receive a voicemail or when you press the program button. Other then that you wouldn't close the program if you wanted it open. If you install it to the device memory, it will automatically open if receive a voicemail.

Well I received my bill and guess what... I was charged over $32.00 for call forwarding charges. I called Sprint and the tech was a real.. PITA, she stated that she could not find any notes in my plan that I shouldn't be charged for this feature. She agreed to remove the fees once and would transfer me over to tech support who could look into this issue more. The tech I spoke with said their was no way to switch the number because if the routing number does not match my phone number I would be charged for call forwarding regardless. She spoke with another tech who confirmed this issue as well. They ended up switching my VM back to the stock system. Looks like all you's who are not getting charged are lucky!
