Re: ok, this is disgusting..

i dunno, i had 3 diamonds, and they all had the same battery cover creaking... i dunno about the paint coming off though. they don't have the chrome so that won't chip at least, and the keyboard can't break off..... but i think they're the same build quality. it really does seem like htc skimped a lot though.

the dull one is from a month's use. not dyed, both clean as can be. its not gunk, its the paint actually coming off.

Re: ok, this is disgusting..

i think the major reason you see it on the pro and not the diamond is the color. the light silver will retain dirt a lot more visibly than the dark red. it has to be either the color simply fading from skin oils or wearing off, or dirt is being trapped in the soft material since its soft touch paint. i cant tell you how the red holds up i recently died mine black. but i had it since its release and didnt see any color change as drastic as the silver on the pro

Most likely a catalyst reaction from the oil of your hands. This happens with paint.

Re: ok, this is disgusting..

i concur

and i think its horrible that HTC skimped on materials. I would have gladly paid another $50 for a build like the X1 which HTC built for Sony. Much sturdier, better materials, brushed metal back, etc.

Re: ok, this is disgusting..

Im just really worried that these devices wont even hold up a a few months with regular usage the way its been going in the first month or 2 so far. People have been having all kinds of hardware issues from the discoloration to the chrome to the earpiece to the dpad etc etc.

Its really a question of do i want to be trapped in a contract for 2 years for a pro that may fall apart quickly or go back to out of contract with a diamond and wait for whatever comes in 2009 which could be better HTC's or Android stuff. While the having the keyboard is much much better than the Diamond, its a question of losing an upgrade discount on something that may be coming which wont have such issues, and if it doesnt having out of contract SERO aint too shabby either

Re: ok, this is disgusting..

i really couldn't deal with not having an sd card, thats mainly why i got rid of the diamond. well, that and excel is virtually useless with an onscreen keyboard. i think the tp's worth it, especially when compared to the diamond.. but if you keep waiting for "new" tech, you're always going to be waiting. i always find it better to just decide on something and call it a day. the only thing thats definitely coming out soon is the treo pro, and with all the problems with the 800w, i dunno if i'd want that anyways. as for android and whatnot... i really don't want android. there's no apps for it. its pretty, but that's not enough for me. i don't think that we're goign to see another htc on sprint for a long time. look how long it took to get a decent replacement for the mogul. the touch wasn't it. that thing was a pos from the start with more problems than a kia.

Re: ok, this is disgusting..

ill prob end up keeping it since there isnt anything better, but its a little annoying that this is HTC's "flagship" device at $579 and they skimped on the cheapest part of the device- the plastic, paint/finish, and tiny parts!

I guess the impression i get is HTC knows they essentially have a WM monopoly in the US so they dont have to be accountable for little things wrong with their phones because theres no other choices. sure you have the treos, epix, and Saga but theyre all essentially a step back in techonology from the specs HTC offers now. basically we have a real lack of WM choice in the US for a good large screen device. We dont have manufacturers here like goldfish, sony, Asus, etc etc- all of the ones who produce European GSM phones. Theres a huge selection of WM devices overseas in slider and touchscreen only variaties and i think HTC realizes its really them or no one for the US so they skimp on the product to make an extra buck since theres no competition.

Re: ok, this is disgusting..

i've had mine since the beginning of November and still haven't experienced this discoloration... sucks to have oily hands? im finally putting my full body protector on, so i guess it's a non issue to me now.. but i was gonna say that i hope it doesn't eventually happen to my pro.

the white nintendo DS shoulder buttons did this too... a bunch of my friends had white DS bodies with yellow shoulder buttons... that's why i went with black..
