Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

This sounds good I just read every post in this thread so I'm convinced to give it a shot. My battery door keeps turning that ugly bronze color so this would be great. I think I will try tonight if I have the time. Great mod! I will post my results to add to the success stories when ever I get to do it. If I can get my hands on some extra backs I am definitely going to try some stencil designs! I'm really interested in doing some "flip flop" paint jobs too

I reckon you will definitely be able to die yourself red.

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Quick update for the masses:

I posted this in the other thread, but i'm now starting to see some bleed-off when i look at my hand... the cover is still black, but i have noticed if i hold it too long or if my palm get sweaty that i'll look like i just got fingerprinted lol...

Well I just boiled it to get it hot, the cover didn't go in with boiling water. I had about a cup, and I added the entire pack of dye, when I did that I put it on medium.... When I was all done, I picked it up with my fingers, so it wasn't that hot.

Here's how mine came out:

Should I just re-do it again, or do I need a new cover?
All you need to do is just buff it... it is supposed to look like this when taken fresh out of the pot...

no new cover is needed, and using the dye remover will not be effective in this case... if it were actually messed up somehow you would just re-dye again... but it's not it just needs to be buffed with a dark cloth...

i believe it shouldn't take too long. don't forget the salt.

yes, you can, try mixing different amounts of black and red dye for optimal diamond colors.

side effects you may want to consider.
1. close to boiling water.
2. might die (though you may get an award for dying, a darwin award)..
3. may not be an exact match.
4. shouldn't be expecting to get laid for a while. (but i guess if you're even considering dying yourself red, this shouldn't be much of a change)..

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

I decided to do this tonight. Couldn't seem to find it at Wal-Mart, but found it at Kroger's. I used the liquid form. Seemed to do the job just as well. I may need to apply it again though, maybe too much water in my mix? I also tried to coat a spare XBox Front Panel cover with this idea, didn't work out quite the same. I guess the XBox plastic isn't coaty enough.

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Jumped into this tonight myself, and dyed the my wifes and my TP's. Very nice turnout as you can see in the pics below. Full packet of dye and a small pan is all I used. The purple cover was only in the dye for less than 2 minutes... I tried 5 minutes first and it turned it black - so I redipped it in the actual black to make it deep black. Second try was the charm. Good tips here guys!

Thanks for the clear pics! It seems the black cover has a strange texture in that last picture...
