To follow-up with my original post on this topic. I had originally dyed mine a very interesting orange color, and I liked it... for about a couple hours. It was nice, but ultimately it didn't do it for me.

Everything during that process went well, with the exception of some strange black discoloration with the clear lens portion of the cover. You can see the pictures in my previous post.

So, back on topic. Luckily I also had some black dye to experiment with (that's just how I roll ). I repeated the process as before with a temperature a little less than before. Previously I set the heat to medium. This time I set it 2/3 of the way between low and medium. There was one pleasant surprise this time around. It dyed perfectly (as before), but the discoloration was gone! So, just so everyone knows, you can easily dye these more than once with ease. And if anyone had the same problem with the lens cover discoloration as I did, it's apparently not permanent.

Maybe this is helpful, maybe not. Either way, enjoy.

that's amazing that it worked twice AND took away the discoloring on the lens cover!! i'm curios what would happen now going from black to a lighter color? heh maybe that's how HTC ended up giving us burgundy! they tried to dye it from black to red and that's the color they got? LOL

That may be another fun project for me next week

RIT also makes a color remover that I may get if it doesn't succeed at first. If I do lighten it up, I think I might go for a nice tan color.

If I do end up doing that, I'll post the results. At least up to this point we know that for less than $2 and about 20 minutes we can keep our phones looking fresh and new. Not too shabby, I think.

Good to know. Mine took longer than 15 minute. More like in hour to achieve the black color I wanted. I was scared that I was going to have a purple color cover at first, though it was still nice in color. Almost went back to walmart to get more black dye.

If I had to do it again I would:
1. Use 1 cup or less water.
2. Boil water and pour it into a glass jug.
3. Mix the DYE WELL. Mix again.
4. Water should be still very hot, but not boiling.
5. Put lid in there and slow move it around (important).
6. Take it out and rinse to see if you like the color, else put it back into the dye.
7. After color is achieved, I used a microfiber cloth to dry.

oh also use two gloves. One hand is clean while my other hand has black dye on it.

I can vouch that this works PERFECTLY for Diamonds... did mine 2 hours ago and I'm in absolute awe of how sexy my phone is now... all for $1.62!!!!!

All it takes is a decent sized pot (stainless steel prefered), filled with water
Set the stove to medium heat, NOT BOILING.
Pour in dye and allow it to dissolve
wash the cover with soap and water to remove any dirt or oil ect
drop in the cover and stylus(s)
set timer for 15 minutes and stir gently
after 15 mins pull it out gently with tongs or a plastic utensil (metal will prolly scratch cover)
after it cools and dries buff it with a dark piece of denim

you now have a perfectly black cover and stylus(s)!

enjoy.

No fading, no ruboff on your hands, no blackening of the camera cover area whatsoever.

Mild smell of dye once done, this will subside over time...
