The process of charging the battery is not the only source of heat. The radios, processor, and other components of the phone are producing enough heat during use that it won't cool down until you let the device become idle.

What baffles me is that you can't run the phone off external power with no battery present.

They did this with the Mogul too... the battery completes the circuit between the board and the charger. Kinda sad.

Re: A little tough Love about battery issues.

My phone's still on and I haven't charged it since 7:30pm yesterday (as noted by my previous posts). Yesterday, I left it idle to loosely compare it to another users idle state, but I've used it lightly today. So whether people believe in battery indicators or not, there are TouchPros that act just as the other HTC devices and don't have excessive/unnecessary/mind-boggling battery drain.
As for some of the other finicky complaints, I just don't see them in my phone. If I press hard enough, my battery cover slightly creeks, but that's because I'm trying hard to get it to creek. To some, that may be a huge complaint; but if it doesn't creek when I'm using it normally then I'm not going to complain at all. As for the keyboard, if I deliberately try to bully it, it'll slightly move. It moved much more on my mogul and I actually noticed it without bullying it, so to me this is an improvement. The speaker and earpiece sounded great and were loud straight out of the box, I didn't have to hard reset or install the audio fix. I found audio quality and sound levels to be better than my 1st and 2nd moguls, so again it's an improvement for me. Maybe I'm just not anal, but I haven't noticed these extreme sensitivity issues near the frame of the screen either. Perhaps some are just having trouble figuring out the end of the screen because the screen is flush with the phone frame, unlike our old phones that had walls to keep us in line. I've yet to come across any problems when using it normally. I bet if I sat there picking at it and analyzed it through a microscope then eventually I'll come across something, but I care more about realistic usage. Again, if I use it as I do and don't notice anything fishy, why should I complain or degrade the phone?
I'm sure there are genuinely faulty phones, as my first mogul wouldn't turn on after the initial charge, but a lot of complaints seem to be more about OCD than realistic ones. I know some of the examples that I mentioned above aren't related to the battery, but I'm just proving a point that some of these complaints about battery life are made by people who actually produce the faults on their own by testing their phones in unrealistic situations or exaggerate based on their other frustrations.

I liked this thread because it pointed out that the battery life really isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, it's just that the charging capabilities might be off. I haven't had to deal with this yet because I only make calls for one or two continuous hours at most at any given time. As for the issues outside of the charger scenario... I'm not calling anyone a liar, but I wish some people would just keep their expectations realistic. Then we may see just how many are actually faulty. The few complaints that I do have are faults that are preexisting in the other HTC phones, so I'm not surprised and I'm definitely not going to return it because of them. ::This phone has way too many pros than cons:: Like many have said, it's a small computer, so we're going to suffer in battery life. Our laptops can't survive more than a few hours without external power, so being able to run a day sounds GREAT to me. I'm truly sorry for anyone that has real problems because I've been there and it sucks.
If I'm in the minority as far as problems, then I'm going to go buy a lottery ticket because I must be lucky. On that note and because I really didn't intend to write so much, I'm done and I'll leave it up to the technical users to keep up the discussion. Keep up the great work guys. Out.

Re: A little tough Love about battery issues.

The analogy should be "Pushing a hybrid bus with a lawnmower engine." Since there is absolutely no reason the phone should use more power, unless you are demanding a lot from the phone. For basic "phone," and PDA usage, you should not really have worse battery life than the Touch, or Diamond, or whathaveyou.

Re: A little tough Love about battery issues.

Does anyone know how much longer the lithium polymer battery lasts on the Sprint TP? My battery shows that its a lithium ion, so I assume its labeled correctly. On HTC's website, it show the TP is offered with a lithium ion or lithium polymer battery. I don't understand why they would go back to lithium ion batteries, unless it was to save money.

Re: A little tough Love about battery issues.

Just a little reminder

Out of 389 Geeks surveyed:

74% love there Touch Pro

And more people thought I asked a stupid question 8% than hated their TP 5%

Take the poll HERE

Re: A little tough Love about battery issues.

Great thread, I couldn't agree more. I can get two days on a chareg with my TP, now mind you that is moderate use maybe check/respond to 5-10 emails a few text messages listen 5-10 songs and maybe 5-10 calls lasting 3-5 minutes each. I had a razr for 3 tears and that phone would go a couple of days on a charge but I got used to plugging it in every night and so I do the same thing with the TP as I did with my touch before it. I think this is an awesome device and the battery life for the most part is what you make of it.

- More initial beta testing, so these issues are more ironed out. Also, give a free phone, to users who participate, if they stay with the contract for more than 4 builds. Software beta testing is easy, compared to hardware variations. Once you change the hardware, or location of chips, it can effect everything and cause the ROM to have be be re-built.
I think it really depends your definition of a problem. Let's go over mine:

A problem is defined as something that you could not judge from a specification or the trial of a sample product.

Take the Mogul. Not enough ram. Is that petition worthy? No, the amount of ram was public information and everyone was capable of doing the math on that one. Or QVGA screen. Or the iPhone's lack of customization. None of these are flaws on the level of what we are talking about here. A problem is something that goes beyond what the spec sheet says, or what a demonstration product showed.

It is a fact that there is a staggaring level of manufacturing quality control variance, both on the outside and the inside of the phone. Again, that tells me either HTC is intentionally cutting corners or we are expecting too much for the price. Both are terrible choices.

Wow, that tells me that they cheaped out on voltage regulation. Of course there is a weight and packaging penalty for more circuitry. Then again, I have an older Sanyo phone that I just tried taking the battery out of and powering on - no go. Maybe that's more common than I expected. But to me that means the problem lies with the heat generation and/or excessive current draw (I still think the two go hand in hand).

Re: A little tough Love about battery issues.

Everyone, I have analyzed some data for the Fuze from Frejos (Thanks for the log file!).

Basically the numbers for current draw are nearly identical to the sprint TP. On data calls the fuze is draing 450-530 mA.
On phone calls the draw was 500-580 mA.
At two points during separate data calls the current peaked at 853 mA.

So it looks like the power usage is independant of the type of transmitter which is at least encouraging for a software fix!

@Kevm

the Voltage regulation and charging circuitry is built into the PM7500 power managment IC. Since getting datasheets on the PM7500 is next to impossible, its not clear to me whether the requirement of having the battery in the circuit is a requirment of the PMIC or a shortcut on HTC's part. (I would REALLY like to get my hands on the datasheet and some application info!)
