Re: How big is your MicroSDHC card and speed?

I have an 8GB class 2 sandisk.

Is there a definitive answer on whether the speed class matters as far as in-device use? Specifically, I'm looking at video playback.

Re: How big is your MicroSDHC card and speed?

At the very least I would think that the card needs to be at least as fast as the size of the movie divided by the length. And I bet it wants to be faster than "1x realtime" to play smoothly. How much I can't say. So in other words, if you have a 2 hour movie, and you transcoded it to 360MB, that is 360MB/120 minutes = 3MB/minute. This doesn't qualify as scientific testing but it would seem that even the slowest card (is there slower than class 2?) is 40x faster than necessary to play that video file. But that doesn't take into account any other data access on that card while playing the video.

By the way, I believe the class ratings were devised as a minimum throughput rating, rather than the old-style ###x ratings, which were peak throughput. Assuming the manufacturers of these are being honest, then any descrepancies may be simply attributed to either a compatibility difference (i.e. the TP favors one card over another, regardless of the speed rating) or simply that the TP can't take advantage of fast cards.

That would be correct, if the speeds were measured in minutes.

If Class 2 [the lowest] transfers at 2 MB per second, there should be absolutely no issue.

Re: How big is your MicroSDHC card and speed?

Ya.. thx god that Sprint gave us 1 gig for the pro. Otherwise I would be forced to buy a bigger one. 20 $ for 8 gig is real nice. But 16 for 4 times the price is just nuts. I will wait until 16gigs drops to 40$. Then we are talking. Btw... will any higher cards be ever released? 16 is the highest.. what about 32?

Probably, but you'll regret not getting a larger sized card. I bought my 8gb class 4 @ the egg.
