Re: Is it a given that the Touch Pro fixes the Mogul issues?

I've had the Mogul since the beginning and the available memory does drop after opening and closing apps. This is with stock as well as with custom ROMs. However, this is supposedly the way WM 6.x works by taking the memory for other apps to use, but not freeing it up. This is what was said by those much more knowledgeable about the inner workings of WM (Colonel, no2chem, etc). I was working with Colonel in the beginning when he had the first custom ROM on the Mogul. However, regardless if this is the case or not, certain apps require a set amount of available RAM. If the system doesn't free it up after usage, then some apps won't have enough to run.

I am not saying the Mogul is a bad phone because it isn't. It's specs just aren't what some of us need. Its like we are running Vista on a 512mb system. Sure it will work, but run too many things and you'll have issues.

The Touch Pro won't be the magic bullet to cure all, but it will give us some more wiggle room.

Re: Is it a given that the Touch Pro fixes the Mogul issues?

Just to say, I love my mogul and it will so far run anything as long as no other major programs are running. Which to me is perfectly reasonable. As such, I love my mogul.

But, the pro has TV-out! I will be upgrading as soon as I can, but not because the mogul was defective; it was what it was.

An old pickup truck is not defective just because it cannot climb a mountain. Just use it wisely and avoid steep terrain. Don't waste your time complaining that other people's cars can climb the rockies. Just get a new one at your convenience, leave those of us that love our non-climbing cars with our thoughts.

Well here's the main thing too, people bought this phone well knowing what hardware limitations were on this phone. I bought this phone well knowing what is available and it's the perfect multimedia & web browsing unit I've used as a phone. I use opera mini and the PIE Youtube Bundle + TCPMP without issues, I stream my orb content, sync my music with napster without hiccups. Now the ram being at about 23 at boot is kinda lame, but to answer the question if the mogul owners are entitled to a free Touch Pro? I say no...

There are pleanty of devices out there, and other service carries, that can definitely meet their needs. If you're saying that you're entitled to a free TP, you've gotta be then suckered into buying this with false hopes. And I highly believe that everyone knew what they were getting themselves into. People are not incompitent, people will do research and purchase what they find is meeting their requirements.

That's just my opinion, I'm happy that I'm buying the unit either full price or discounted, cause atleast I know I'm not trying to sucker the system in getting a free phone.

Re: Is it a given that the Touch Pro fixes the Mogul issues?

Oh and another thing, I'm planning to get the TP because of Memory, the new body (i truly don't like the beveled screen) and the accelerometer. Fun lil toys!

I think this was mostly a response to the iPhone demand, otherwise we would probably get a updated Mogul style device with maybe more memory.

Re: Is it a given that the Touch Pro fixes the Mogul issues?

The main limitation for me on the Mogul is the memory, it's too low for daily use. Other then that I have enjoyed my phone but cant wait to upgrade it. Having a phone with a better screen, more memory and more functionality is exactly what the doctor ordered. Currently my Mogul is acting up and i'm dying to switch.

No, they're not "designed" to run on your phone. They're WM5 apps that work on WM6.1 if you have significant free memory. Which the mogul does not. I know they're memory hogs, you do, other people do too. Why would you expect them to work when you know exactly how much free memory you have and how much they consume?

Get rid of both of them and see how it goes.

But we're far afield now. I like the "vista on a 512mb machine" analogy. It's much closer to correct (or its the same as my "1gb linux box" one.) On a mogul you give up Today eye candy for more memory/stability.

You can stuff an elephant into a phone booth, but it's not going to work well.

stroths, as you use any WM, more of the internal buffers are allocated until it finally allocates all of them - at that point (barring memory leaks) your free memory after exiting all apps should be stable/consistent. If that "working set" free memory is too low, you can lower the settings for your various buffers to free some up (you'll need a soft reset, of course...)

I found that moving from WM5 to WM6 to WM6.1 it was necessary to dial down the various buffers we all learned to crank up on the apache to keep the free memory around 18mb on my stock rom.

So I think we've reached consensus - I don't know what I'm talking about, like to slap people in the face, and am generally un-knowledgeable about the device I use and develop on daily. Yep, 4x the memory is going to solve every ill, and might even fix the economy. We're saved!

Plenty of other devices? Really? Name one other device for SPRINT (my carrier, you know, the one I have a two-year-contract with for five lines of service?) that's comparable that can meet those needs. And you put too much faith in people, including knowledgeable people. We bought the device when BRAND NEW. And I based it off of years of experience with Windows Mobile devices.

Re: Is it a given that the Touch Pro fixes the Mogul issues?

I suspect mission creap will set it. I have no doubt that Opera 9.5 could run much faster if it only used four times the memory. Programs do load faster if they are all pre-loaded into memory.

As such, I suspect the problem of "more memory than we could ever need!" will either be solved for us once WM7 comes out or when people start writing plugins and applications with the expectation of 512MB of memory, not the paltry 256 found on the TP.

Re: Is it a given that the Touch Pro fixes the Mogul issues?

The Touch has been available for quite a long time and solves the memory issue. At the cost of a keyboard and wifi, but you can't have everything (on sprint, anyway.)

And I thought there was a lot of disappointment around the mogul when its specs came out and people saw it (still) only had 64mb ram. Wasn't sprint offering to swap touches for moguls for a while? I thought a bunch of people here did that swap.

(off topic, you should be eligible by now for the "full discount" on the Pro via sprint, no?)

Touch is hardly comparable. I don't need WiFi, but no way I'm dealing with an on-screen keyboard. I'm a touch typist. I need a hardware QWERTY keyboard.

And yes, while people were disappointed by 64MB of RAM, we were still under the silly impression it would actually have 64MB of RAM, not 48MB, with most of that taken up by the OS. Those were things not learned until after the phone was in our hands.

And no, full discount's at 22 months. Mogul's been around 18.
