Easy answer: goverment intervention.

Take for example, my vehicle of choice is the Toyota Land Cruiser. Recently I have been trying to import from Canada a 1985 model, with a diesel engine. This vehicle is exactly the same as the US version, but with a diesel engine. The Department of Transportation says it is NOT the same vehicle and that I need to pay them $10,000 in "conversion fees".

Now I know why Ruby Ridge happened.

Same with these phones. FCC regulations, tech maybe too advanced for the regular Joe, not fashionable enough for the American taste. Therefore these phones get changed before they hit these shores: red backs, no front camera, slower processors, less memory, less powerful radios. Becasue it does not fit some standard arbritary selected based on a stud by some post-doc student with an agenda. Not even a real Doctorate scientist!

And that's where the American part of the equation comes in: In corporate POLITICS--the part that has nothing to do with how competent a product is or how well it performs.

It all has to do with which lobbyist's pockets can be lined by what deal. Meanwhile, the average, clueless consumer loses.

It's no wonder the American dollar trades so weak anymore.

I feel drained after reading all these rants. Damn you guys are really getting overly emotional over stuff you have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL over. Just take it for what it is. You can either wait for the phone and buy it as it is, or buy something else. I really don't see what the big fuss is about.

things are stripped and watered down because of government regulations and standards that have to be met.

Because.......

I'm a spoiled American.

I like my burgers thick, and my bucket of fries extra greasy.

I also enjoy my freedom of speech, and my right to complain about every little thing that exists.

OR--we live in a supposed global "economic power"--whatever that means. *rolls eyes*

I work hard for a living, as I'm sure many of us here do. I'm not rich. But I do like my toys. And I don't like being told "NO" on principal alone.

Does anyone care?

Maybe not.

Will all my complaining ever change "the system"?

Hell no.

But do I get to share MY FRUSTRATION with other people who might as well be more or less as frustrated as I am?

Yes.

Does it make me feel any better?

A little.

Is it worth it?

Look at the length of this thread and you tell me.

That's partly true but not the case in all the stuff we get but you are right.

if they were offered and heavily marketed by at&t and co I'm sure it would be as successful here in the US as it is elsewhere.

And plus you need to know that
1) only AT&T would be able to offer video calling as of today. They never did offer it because they never had a widespread 3G network. (remember the iphone wasnt 3G at first cause apple considered at&t 3G network wasnt wide enough). Now they are better but stil very spotty and they could/might offer it in the near future (maybe with the 3rd iphone).

2) Tmobile are far away from beiing 3G. Only New York is kind of covered.

3) Like someone else said Sprint and Verizon are CDMA so they will never offer video calling as long as they are CDMA. Maybe they wiill next gen once everyone is LTE.
Video calling has been offered before over other methods (landlines/etc). It has never taken off. Sprint and Verizon could cover it if they really wanted to by putting a separate data radio in their phones. It has been a hit in other countries for a while.

Watered down version? They took out ONE of the two CAMERAS. That is all. Nothing else. They even improved the diamond.

The grass is always greener on the other side dude.

Telus, the first CDMA carrier to receive the diamond also removed the front camera FYI.

Well that is a rational point: You think they improved the device.

To each his own.

Cheers. *offers holo a beer*
