☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [WARNING] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
--UPDATE - 11/15 10:45PM CST--
A SOLUTION HAS BEEN FOUND! MightyMike and Juggalo_x have been working all day on this issue, and it has paid off. The latest OEM packages include a rogue intshr.exe/.lnk within their OEMDrivers that has tracking embedded. This results USB2PC popup to launch this application, rather than Microsoft's native Internet Sharing application. Although both applications look the same, the carrier version has tethering detection enabled. Sprint users are not affected due to an 67 error code displayed while using the USB2PC popup. Any CDMA OEM drivers includes this. Telus users have this feature working by default, therefore will suffer the repercussions of tethering. All chefs are urged to notify their users of possible outcomes, if they do not resolve this issue accordingly. MightyMike and Juggalo_x have taken down both of their ROMs, and we strongly urge all other chefs to do so IMMEDIATELY to fix this issue. Again, their hard work is GREATLY appreciated. - Update: MightyROM is back online, issues fixed. More information in a quote from MightyMike: Quote:
And Juggalo_x's personal explanation :) : Quote:

>>>HOT FIX FOUND HERE<<< Confirmation that the fix is working: (thanks MightyMike) http://i37.tinypic.com/2dr9rps.jpg --UPDATE - 11/15 6:30PM CST-- UPDATE: We are receiving more reports from Telus users that tethering hacks have been detected on some ROM/radio combinations. Please check your bills if you have used tethering! If you have charges we need you to post them here so we can get a better idea of where the issue lies. IMMEDIATELY DISCONTINUE THE USE OF TETHERING IF YOU NOTICE CHARGES ON YOUR ACCOUNT! --UPDATE - 11/15 12:30PM CST-- It has come to our attention that Telus users seem to have have a major issue with Tethering. MightyMike and Juggalo_x just noticed Telus has an overage charge on their bills for 1x data, indicating Telus just may have detected the tethering tweaks. We urge all Telus users to check their bills immediately at mytelusmobility.com > "E-care" > "View Data Usage". As a Sprint user, I have checked my bill as well and NOT noticed any overages either, so Sprint users should be fine. This is just a word of CAUTION - we do not wish to cause mass panic. We thought it would be better to give you a heads up than to wait until we knew there was an issue. We are not sure what is causing the detection but we are investigating the issue and working on a solution. Any users who notice the charge on their bills, PLEASE post in this thread so we can confirm whether this is widespread or not. Re: [CAUTION] - Telus Tethering Users
Here was my kinder surprise when I went to check my data usage.

Re: [CAUTION] - Tethering Users
You did use a 1.5GB... $1300 seems a bit expensive though. Did you get a credit for that?

Re: [CAUTION] - Tethering Users

the 1,300 charge was for 300mb of data usage. |

Hey MM what plan are you on for data...I just looked on Telus's web site and to my amazement... "Additional usage will be charged at $0.05/MB. Cannot combine with any other data plan. Tethering included. Additional data is charged by the MB or GB and is rounded up to the closest KB (1 GB =1,024 MB; 1 MB = 1,024 KB). Data usage is subject to a monthly overage limit of 10 GB." I assume you are on the Diamond 15 Unlimited Data Plan but I dont know if this would apply to grandfathered plans or not but maybe you could get some of that cash back. I also looked on my contract and now where does it state that use of Tethering is either excluded or included...who knows. Good Luck. |
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
lol, data has the largest markup, costs them fractions of a fraction of a penny last I checked.
That being said, tethering is dangerous and you should assume the liability. |

Well, danger is relative... I consider a nickle per meg to be a cause for peril :) as I'm sure MM has now learned. Maybe "hazardous" would be a better choice of word :-D |
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
When you connect with internet sharing are you selecting "data network" or "phone as modem" ? I just noticed that on mine I have Sprint. As of right now no charges.

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
Ok so I'm new to this forum and site but did geta suprise this weekend when attempting to tether my TP2 on Tmobile. When it would connect, I was advised that Tmobile has disabled this feature "officially" due to the traffic on their 3G network. Only 2G Winmo phones, the Wing and the Dash, and all Blackberries are able to tether with Tmobile these days. Many of you already know this probably.

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
I think Verizon is on to us as well. They're just a little nicer about it. When trying to tether I get this screen on my browser. At least they don't let me browse then charge me for it.

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
wait, 300mb=1300 dollars? wtf? are you fighting it mighty?
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
At a rate of $0.05/MB, that would be about 25-26GB for the $1300 charge. Something doesn't seem to be adding up right there.

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
I take it that the "tethering in stealth mode" .cab hack is really not in stealth mode at all? It looks like many carriers radar penetrates stealth mode. I'm just assuming everybody has been using the stealth mode hack.

This is what I get when using Mighty's latest ROM. I took it for a sign of don't use it for tethering. Hopefully this gets straightened out. Maybe we should all donate some $$ to MightyMike for this to help him out. |

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
damn MM.. that has to hurt.. i went over my minutes one time and had to pay about a 100 bucks extra that one month and that hurt.. i can imagine that

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
it was 2 years ago when I got my first PPC, the Mogul. genius enough, I used data without a data plan, and as a result, I got a 1000 dollar bill. I called Telus and "acted dumb." First the customer representative told me there's nothing they can do, but I insisted on talking to the manager or whoever is in charge. They switched me over, and who knew, it worked and they deducted my data usage charge with the condition of adding the 15 unlimited IM addon. Acting dumb works, sometimes.

Whoa!
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
I assume you were actually tethered and not using a Wireless solution like PDA Net, WMWifiRouter, or HTC Wifi Router?
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
Sprints bills are so rediculously hard to understand, I would need a phd to figure out if I'm getting charged or not.

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
What exactly is tethering?
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
It's using your cell phone's internet on your laptop or desktop
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
and how can sprint find out that your doing that?
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
So Telus is able to detect this only on TP2?
What about TP1 or Mogul? Trying to add other questions into the mix to help figure this out... |

If it was just using your device my wonder changes to whether or not Telus has simply had a billing issue and in that case as long as you were with in your plan then you have an argument.... other wise the fight could be fruitless. |
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
Ok...we're sure MM knows what he was doing...could very be due to the "weird" reg entries the TP2 has...remember the softkey issue when we first got our phones?
As for the others, they MAY not have been using the "right" hack for tethering. I have been using the ICS WModem fix.cab. Between that and WMwifi router...I have not seen any issues...HOWEVER...I am on Sprint. I'm quite sure we all know that Sprint is usually a step or two behind all the carriers anyway |
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
i was tethering with my phone to surf on my computer, so i think telus knows!!!!
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
but how can sprint or any carrier see that your using your tethering your phone?
|
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
ok guys so i know ive got boned for a lil over 200 bux,
users who are getting caught please report the rom your using. ive been going through mine with a microscope and i still cannot find anything that would cause us to get caught. im using all thte old tweaks and other stuff. for telus users its not looking good may be the radio :( ive noticed some new entries in the NV regarding "Tethering NAI" |
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
does my way make it hidden again? at least with sprint. maybe telus has other settings
Tethering - tested and works 1 - using file explorer go to Windows\Start Menu\Programs - delete internect connection sharing 2 install - ICS_and_WModem_Fix cab 3. using a regedit program [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing] Extension="" Delete the "isext.dll" entry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing\settings] ForceCellConnection="Sprint" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing] MaxCMCon=0 [HKLM\Services\CMGuardian] Flags = 4 (it's a DWORD Value. if it doesn't exist. you need to create it) 4 - soft reset 5 - Start the Internet Sharing application. 6 - Select Sprint under type of connection. 7 - Hit Connect In the Internet Sharing application. 8 - Connect to the Laptop/PC via USB 9 - Done. No other applications needs to run on the PC/Laptop. |

I'm at:

Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
First post updated. And thanks for the info on the bills, guys. Keep it coming.
At this point, I think it's pretty safe to say Telus users are at risk of getting charged for stealth tethering. |
Re: ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ [CAUTION] - Tethering Users ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢ ☢
sorry to say, but I don't think this an isolated issue!
