Re: Smartgear works great on Touch Pro 2! NES! Genesis!

If anything, I think Android would be easier to migrate to, and still keeping support for WM 5-6.5 devices. Right now WP7 is a royal headache. It's too early to tell if it would be a good idea or not to start writing code for. And besides that, he woud have to pay MS $100 just to input his software into the marketplace. I'm not bashing WP7 like I usually do, Just pointing out some things.

I don't know if you're looking into it or not, but if you're working out existing bugs and other stuff in some of the consoe emulation, Genesis is a place to look at. Like I mentioned earier, Gen has some sound issues. If you could look into those, that'd be great. I love my Gen games. It's like NES where I played over 150 games way back then. It, like NES and SNES are what I remember from growing up. Not trying to sound picky, I just enjoy my games to the fullest when the sound/music are working as wel as possibe. I'm a 35 yr old guy who still loves to play the **** out of these games. Having something I can show my friends... and not some dumb I-phone thing.

I know you got it listed on your site someplace, but how much to register SG? And are updates free or is there a fee? Thanks LB

On a side note. My "L" key is not working ike it should so forgive the possible vast amount of typos I may have in my posts ately.

I'm not sure what the future holds because it looks like WM6.x has a short life ahead. I will continue to support WM6.x as long as it makes sense, but I am also looking at where to migrate this code and am considering Android. That's all I can say about it at the momen.

I am constantly trying to improve all aspects of SmartGear, but I have very limited time to work on it. The Genesis sound code comes from my partner and is quite complicated. He did a decent job considering how poor the documentation is and how complex the chip (YM2610) is, but it performs too poorly for use on mobile devices. I've been wanting to rewrite it for a long time, but it's a huge undertaking. I am constantly having to weigh the benefit of working on the various parts of the code and since it's only me, progress can be slow. The YM2610 code is the only code that I personally didn't write. I have reached the point where I am going to start writing my own Yamaha FM code because I also have coin-op projects that need this code. I can't say how long it will take, but I will be working on it. Right now I am working as quickly as possible to fix important bugs and wrap up features so that I can release the official 2.0 build of SG. New Genesis sound code will not make it into this release. I work on SmartGear mostly for me because I love to play the old classics, but I listen to users and incorporate their ideas as well. I do what's possible within my limited time and budget. It generates a very small revenue for me which is usually just enough to buy a new WM devices every few months for testing. Right now I own a HTC Vox, HTC Shadow, HP h2210, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Touch Pro 2, Dash 3G, and HTC HD2.

Re: Smartgear works great on Touch Pro 2! NES! Genesis!

I've just uploaded 2.0.14. The documentation and code has been updated. The two big changes for this release are the pause screen paint has been cleaned up and the wireless controller can now be used to drive the GUI of SmartGear and in any program running on your device. In other words, SmartGear can be used as a "driver" to allow your bluetooth wireless controllers to work in any application.

www.bitbanksoftware.com/sg.zip
www.bitbanksoftware.com/SG_Help.html
www.bitbanksoftware.com/SG_Beta.html

This also fixes the problems with loading and saving games from the file menu and the strange paint problem I was seeing on the HD2 where the display would not paint after accessing menus a few times.

It's very quiet here today; does that mean the new build is working well?

Re: Smartgear works great on Touch Pro 2! NES! Genesis!

just got my game pad yesterday.... am using an older version of SG - will download the latest...

i know my feedback will be old given the latest update but fwiw - generaly thigns work great, very happy with the reponsiveness. I did note that SG seams to lose its connection with the gamepad. if i exit out of a game and just let SG site there it will ask me to connect to the controler. Also, the screen that asks for the connection sometimes appears behind the SG interface.

I'll get the latest SG and see if that still occurs.

Re: Smartgear works great on Touch Pro 2! NES! Genesis!

ok, same issue, here;s how to recreate it:

Start SG, play a game, pause, exit from game. Let the phone and controller just sit for a while. In about a minute SG will ask to connect to the controller. you cannot cancel out. Now, try to hit cancel and tht second where the SG interface is visible tap the interface. The dialoge asking about the connection is now behind SG - you cannot connect as the screen will never appear unless you exit SG and then there it is.

Question - is it normal for the connection to the BT game pad to drop like that?

The gamepad itself times out and disconnects from bluetooth if you don't use it for a certain period of time. I agree that the connection window is annoying. The old method of suppressing that window with a registry setting doesn't work anymore. Does anyone know how to disable the Widcomm SPP connection window?

Re: Smartgear works great on Touch Pro 2! NES! Genesis!

I am unsure of the Widdcomm BT stack. But I am certain someone else here knows about it. I have seen several devs here bring it up in ROM threads.

I'll get the latest and check it out. Sorry I do not have any wireless controls to test out yet. Although, that idea about using a smartphone with D-pad (like the Dash and Q9M) as a BT controller is a great idea. I just wonder how much delay there would be between the actual button press and the actual command. I know the Q9M had some delay issues while BT was on, but that was in other applications like TCPMP, might be different.

Oh, and LB, you've got mail just FYI.

Re: Smartgear works great on Touch Pro 2! NES! Genesis!

Just tried latest version. Heres what I have found so far. Tested out some more NES games, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Taito version). I had a copy sitting on my card but I think it was a bad dump, so I dl'd the above (good crc). As soon as the title screen comes on , the music freezes and the graphics get all garbled up. Buttons dont respond. Got a good crc of Castlevania III - Draculas Curse. As soon as it loads, the screen goes blank. Tried 2 different versions of the game and the same thing happens. Wizards & Warriors, Game plays fine but the music is a little messed up. Gauntlet (Tengen), game is sort of playable but graphics seem like they are out of place. Walk through walls but I dont think they are realy there. Walk through some treasure chests and your character doesn't pick them up, just like walking through it. Cybernoid seems to work ok but there are numerous graphical glitches and some minor sound glitches. The graphic glitches appear as a clipping type, that is, when they appear, your ship can run into them/touch them. Not sure, but it may or may not be a bad dump.

Games I know that work well on NES so far. Air Fortress, Castlevania II, Karnov (good crc), Golgo 13, Metroid. I will test more and report as I get time.

I cant get the button mapping to work on my TP2. No matter what I do some of the buttons I map always bring me back to the Smartgear main screen.

Speedy, what buttons are you having problems with? Have you tried using any of these for directionals... "A,S,D,Q,W,E,Z,X,C" ? And any of these for pad fire buttons "U,I,O,J,K,L,B,N,M"? Those keys work fine for me. Try them out and post the results.
