My phone is SIM unlocked. I popped in an old AT&T sim that I have, my minutes on it just expired a week ago. It found the AT&T network and registered.

I was able to call AT&T customer service and it showed the G in the taskbar.

Hmmm - You should get at least an E or even an H, no? GPRS on ATT sounds like a nightmare to me... Anybody else try their unlocked CDMA version on ATT or TMO? What kind of data connection were you able to get?

I thought I read somewhere that someone or a team was working on a SIM unlock that would be free, I may be confused reading posts from this site, HF and XDA Developers.

If this is the case, has progress been made?

I haven't heard of anything as yet with regards to unlocking the sim...

I was getting E sometimes, but the area I was in was spotty. I was just across the border in Blaine WA.

Haha - right! That's where all CAN and US providers duke it out. I always start roaming on the ferry ride about when you pass through that little triangle of US water...

The rumour is that once a HSPL is available for CDMA/GSM TP2, it MIGHT be accompanied by an unlocker, or one soon to follow. I wouldn't hold your breath though. From what I understand, you'd need the HSPL before you could unlock sans code. Sounds similar to the iPhone with the jailbreak -> unlock.

If you need it, pay the $35. If you don't, wait until you can't wait anymore. At any point you can pay and unlock...

Thanks for your info and findings! But it really makes me wonder is that just some software setting or does the phone have the ability to register on the bands all mentioned for UTMS. telus only shows that the hardware is compatable with UMTS/HSPA (2100 MHz), meaning that it wouldnt be able to register on the HSPA serviecs that are going to be offered by BELL/Telus/ Rogers in Canada.

Here is a cheaper option. I had to DOA my phone and wanted my 2nd one unlocked. This one was fast, had my code within about 45 minutes.
