One common word that can be very confusing, even for native speakers, is 'el hambre.' Even though it has the article 'el,' it is a feminine noun that takes feminine adjectives. For example, 'tengo mucha hambre.' There are a lot of other common words that work this way, too.
So, since when did I become an expert? Ha! I'm not (not even close). I really wish I could become fluent in Spanish. BTW, I studied German in high school and some day I'd love to take a refresher. I think I'd do much better now.
