Re: TP2 backlight setting is all screwed up & keeps changing

This common issue has plagued every WinMo phone I've ever used. I've had luck with DLCPhoto's noted fix above...hard reset should not be necessary as it is probably just a corrupted registry setting.

First set the time to what you want (1 minute, or whatever). Then go into your Registry:

HKCU\Control Panel\Backlight\LockLevel\LockLevel - the dWord there should be 0. I've found it set to 1 or 2, for no apparent reason.

This still happens to me periodically, and I've had my TP2 for over a year. Very frustrating, but at least it's easily fixed.

See if this works for you.

It was set to 6 and I just reset it to 0 and did a soft reset. It seems to be ok now and I will keep an eye on it to see if it returns.

That's one out of two issues that are hopefully resolved. The other one is my battery life issue which coincided with this backlight problem.

Well my TP2 has a mind of it's own and has started doing the same thing again with the backlight. I checked and the backlight number was at 2.

I am beginning to think the TP2 is haunted.

Are you using the shipped 6.5 or 6.1 rom?
Are you using a power management app?
What type of screen lock are you using?

Re: TP2 backlight setting is all screwed up & keeps changing

Folks with this problem should probably start tracking what apps they run on a regular basis that have the potential to mess around with backlighting settings.

I've had this exact problem, and I found a few scenarios that would mess up the locklevel and/or backlight registry settings...

1. apps like IGO 8 (GPS apps are notorious if you ask me) with power management/backlighting override setting ENABLED. If IGO terminates prematurely it can foobar the locklevel settings and the backlight auto setting (if enabled, may become disabled and remain so until you manually re-enable it). The GPS apps will try to prevent lock screens and back-lighting options from taking effect.

2. some 3rd games I've installed in the past will also try to override the power management/backlight settings in an attempt to make the gaming experience "better"... again if that app does not terminate correctly could leave things in a wacky state.

3. user installed some kind of 3rd party lock screen, and the uninstall was not clean/complete. I've had this happen with s2u2 long ago.

The problem is rarely the ROM as I've seen this stuff on stock, Energy, and even Might I've tried before. It will almost always be some kind of 3rd party installed app and some odd circumstance - but that's just based on my experience... so who knows.

Sorry for the late reply but I have been traveling. I am on Sprint's stock 6.5 ROM. There is no power management tool and I am using the stock ROM's screen lock.

Hmm...well like eric said it may be that Sprint 6.5 rom. It's not the best in my opinion. Use the 6.1 version or maybe it's time to flash to Vin's or lead rom.
Hard reset will probably be a temporary fix.

Re: TP2 backlight setting is all screwed up & keeps changing

I am having this exact problem...tried the registry fix and it works for a while (just like changing the setting in Sense's settings does), but then it comes back later that day or the next day. I am not using a power management app or anything like that, and I am using SmartLock 2.0F...but I've been using that for months with no problem. Last two things I installed were Skype and the WP7 theme, which I deleted shortly after.

Re: TP2 backlight setting is all screwed up & keeps changing

This backlight issue reoccurred again for me and I resorted to the fix in post #8 to resolve the problem again.
