I said that you can UNINSTALL some factory installed apps like SprintTV and SprintNav. I know for a fact that SKTools will do this because I did it myself! You have to go into settings in sktools and have it show "apps not listed as installed" in order to be able to select them for uninstallation. You can't completely remove some system files and cabs because they are in ROM but you can UNINSTALL apps. Do you get it!?

Re: does anyone know how to erase system files like;
All that is doing is removing the shortcut (the *.lnk file). The app itself will still be remain.

So, I'll explain. It will uninstall the exe, link, folders, any related image files, audio files and other stuff so it does(in some cases) free up several MBs! I'm done argueing with you dude. Either believe me or not. I don't care either way. |

Re: does anyone know how to erase system files like;
To my understanding, (I didn't study this too much yet), there're three parts of memory in the normal Winmo settings, one we call ROM, which you can't erase from the phone other than unlock the phone and reflash it, One is called Storage Memory, One is called Program Memory. From some utility program, like total command, you can delete files in the windows folder, which will result to increase to the storage memory, and after a hard reset, those things will come back. I don't know how to reduce the use of program memory. I notice today that my program memory ran to 20MB after I browse my pictures using the album. But after a soft reset, it went to 100MB, wtf is that?

Re: does anyone know how to erase system files like;
ROM is where the main OS and any OEM files/apps are stored. Nothing can be deleted from there. Some mods (like Manila files) will overwrite certain files, but they don't get deleted, just made invisible. They continue to take up space in ROM, which is static. The only way to reduce it is to flash a smaller ROM. Storage Memory is the area of the device where new programs and files get written to. It is not in ROM. Anything in Storage Memory can be deleted and the space reclaimed. Some of the programs that come with the device from the factory are in there as are things like shortcuts and configuration files that need to be modified by the OS while in use. Unfortunately, the more Storage Memory you use, the less RAM will be available for running the device. That's why it is best to install any program that can be to a memory card. Program memory is your available RAM. This is where the OS and startup files/programs get copied to when you start the device. This is volatile and gets wiped out with each restart. This increases and decreases depending on how much stuff you have loading on startup, the mods you make to the shell (Sense customizations) and how many running programs you have at a given time. It is dynamic. Poorly written programs with memory leaks can cause it to fluctuate wildly during the day.

Re: does anyone know how to erase system files like;
Interesting, I'd often wondered if clearing stuff out of storage memory increased available RAM for the phone to use.
I think miami's right. Having no idea about whether what horn said was true, I tried a little experiment. I enabled that option in SKtools and it did in fact bring up a few of those unregistered programs like Opera9. But, guess what happens when I use the "uninstall" option on in SKTools? It only APPEARS to work. It removes opera9 from the list, it claims it freed up about 7.5 MB. But when I go back to the windows folder... there's Opera9.exe still, taking up 7.5 MB of space. Beyond that, when I delete it using total commander, it thinks for a second then says "could not delete 1 item". I soft reset just to make sure that the file maybe wasn't erroneously being listed in TC even after deletion (maybe it wasn't letting me delete because I already had deleted it?). But after reset, when I got back to my windows folder, it's still there. And it still can't be deleted (though the entry for opera9 is now missing from SKtools uninstall). I hate to say it horndoctor, but I suspect some of those programs you cleaned up with sktools weren't really uninstalled, sktools just thinks they are. |
