SOLUTION!
Alright people, I had the same problem here.
It was driving me freaking mad, especially when I was texting two or more people at once. My phone became almost inoperable to the point where I wanted to snap it in half.

The fix is very simple.
Delete all your old messages!

Problem solved!
That is all you need to do, just after that try a soft reset and you shouldn't have this problem anymore.

That is the only fix and it's kind of common sense here. I know everyone's been spitting that back and forth but I can confirm to all that from the perspective of someone that had this problem this is an instant solution. If problems persist uninstall HTC task manager and disable Sense homepage animations. Both Animation Wallpapers and Weather.

I have given up on sense. Its the cause of my issues here for sure. Even with NO SMS and about 50 emails, sense was unusable. The rub is with contacts I believe. I have switched to SPB Mobile Shell (and also tried windows default which is titanium I think) and the phone is behaving very well. SPB looks like the solution for me...what a killer interface!!!

You are correct, but I think it may be with contacts and/or a lot of text messages. I have no text messages, but a lot of contacts and it freezes. I've spoken to plenty of people that are having this problem because of both situations. Sprint is actually sending me a brand new phone with 6.5 pre installed. We shall see when that arrives. My guess is the same problem will happen and this is a shortcoming of Sense. I like titanium, but I like TouchFlo better and it should work as advertised.

That's the solution. Cleared up all text messages. In fact, leaving them in the deleted folder works too if you dont access the deleted folder. For me, I cleared it all up, even the deleted folder. Works like a charm now, no crashes, and stable.

I did as one poster suggested and installed SPB Mobile Shell. Thus far no issues at all, and now that I've learned the 3.x version (I used to use the 2.x) I'm really liking it. It is in most respects as good as or better than Sense. I did like the weather background on the Sense better, but I also understand that it may have been a memory pig. Unless the problem comes back, I'm sticking with SPB MS.

here try this, I was thinking the lock up came from the SMS sent Pop up and after installing this cab that really disables the pop up! The lock up is gone !!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561443. Read the post works for sprint from what i read.

A couple of things I found out: Make sure the photos for your contacts are a reasonable size. A couple of mine were really large, and it slowed things down for me a lot. It only makes sense because when you receive a text it processes through the contact list to match the phone number up with someone in your contacts. If the images are too big it tends to lock things up.

Secondly, I found that Sense does a terrible job of processing Facebook information and it seems that almost every time you do something with your contacts it reaches out to update Facebook info. I turned this off in the data services area and it seems to be running a bit faster.

Shame on you HTC. Although there are some improvements with Sense, TouchFlo3D on 6.1 ran 100x more efficiently. Even with the huge contact images I had, TF3D never gave me a problem.
