I mean if you think about teen audience, how many don't know how to use a computer? they all do, but when they picked up those windows mobile phones and it lagged up like crazy and didn't make phone calls cause they had another app running they just gave up on windows mobile.

If microsoft would have enforced better hardware from them like they do for WP7 now from day 1, microsoft would have been on higher on the list.
MS is 1st and foremost just a software company. They never had hardware when they started. So it's just a chain of events that eventually leads to WP7. Time changes. Apple set the example on how to run a Phone. Open an app store and make sure that the OS and Phone's reliability comes first. Even if they need to eliminate functions like multitasking.

It seems to work for Apple. Now MS wants a piece of it. They might lose a lot of "us". But they will certainly gain a lot of "them" WHich will bring them the sales.

Re: What do you think of Windows Phone 7?

honest question, what's the big deal with multitasking? I have an iphone I use as my toy on occasions, and dont know what the big fuss is about. I also have a tp2, which tends to make my tp2 collect dust. I know I can pull up a site while going to text someone. If the site is on pause when I text, no big deal.

So what's the big deal? Can I no longer receive email while browsing the net?

Most people won't need it, but those of us that do DO. While most of the population use their phones simply for calls, email, txts, and browsing, people like me remote desktop to my home machine, ssh/telnet to multiple devices/servers, etc.... all on top of the "standard" use of the phone. So to lose my remote desktop session, or ssh session every time I need to browse a site for information would seriously cripple my abilities to function.

I'm really looking forward to WP7S! I'm going to be sure to get it as soon as Sprint offers up a phone with it.

I absolutely love how the UI looks. I've used a ZuneHD and if my phone acts the same way, it's going to be a welcome change. The UI is right up my alley in the aesthetics department. I love that everything is flat and graphical. I love the use of typography and the cut off text is absolutely an excellent way to indicate that if you move around, you'll see more data. I think that Apple's "realistic" style is so dated. WP7S's design is the first thing that really feels like it belongs in the year 2010.

There are so many people out there complaining about how you won't be able to customize it and how awful it will be. For me, the only reason I build my own custom ROM is to get rid of every trace of HTC's stuff from my phone and then to fix the problems with WM. If I can have a phone that works well right out of the box that I won't have to do a bunch of stuff to, I'll more than welcome it! Who really thinks that doing registry edits on your phone is acceptable? Just for the record, I hate the iPhone. I hate the stupid grid of icons and the UX design. Of course, if you want to be able to make your phone as ugly and slow as you choose, Android is waiting for you with open arms and Windows Mobile Classic is going to be around for a long while.

Of course, there's still a lot of questions to be answered. Is there a file system? How extensible is the system? Can I replace Bing with Google if I want? Hopefully, they'll address everything at MIX next month.

I forget where I heard this but apparently they're going to enable Visual C# 2010 Express for WP7S development. If that's true, there's no reason why there won't be a ton of apps.
Our complaint is not with the OS, microsoft can release whatever OS they want..but why did they have to name in WM7 meaning next version of windows mobile? That is our complaint, they SHOULD have just gave that OS a new name like palm did and dual track continuing windows mobile and this OS under a different brand. But putting this OS as 7 does not look good.

How would you feel if windows 8 comes out and your OS is one used on a 20$ barby computer? That is what makes most people bitter. The brand "Windows" in general should be associated with a PC, not a dumbphone.

And some people claim there will be media edition and business edition but I find that hard to believe as that would make a lot of confusion, more then people would like.

they didn't name it wm7 they renamed it windows phone 7 series so they kinda did what u wanted them to...windows phone = more of a phone & windows mobile = windows on the go they are still making wm 6.5.?? so its not like they stopped, and they are 2 different teams working on them, anyway im getting a windows phone 7 series when it comes & keeping my tp2 & as soon as they figure out wifi tethering for wp7 then i can bring my tp2 with me if i need to do a certain task if wp7 is as limited as some people want to believe

That is a misconception..we just choose to still call it Windows Mobile... Microsoft as of 6.5 already calling it Windows Phone. It is a brand name change altogether and many don't want to adopt the dumb new name.

Where did you read there weren't 2 editions? What I read was a quote from a Microsoft Exec early on at the conference. Granted I can't find the article now, but I do remember that specifically.

That being said, I'm an IT Consultant with almost 10 years of experience with Exchange. For those of you who don't have any real world BUSINESS experience, then your conclusion would seem rational. However, if you also knew how much money Microsoft has poored into Unified Communications for their mobile phones, you would realize just how different the end result may actually be. Either a lot more functionality is going to be integrated before launch, or there will be two phone editions. One for the corporate user and one for the home user.

For those that aren't in the know, the entire Exchange, Sharepoint, Office, and Communication server/application suite is literally built around the Windows mobile phone platform. I see no reason why they would outdate millions of dollars in research and development. Everything they have been working on, and still developing for, the past 5-7 years has been integrating the enterprise environment into the mobile phone world. The whole idea is that you can use your phone as a complete office assistant to manage calendars, email, voicemail, etc.

Too many people look at this from a personal/home based viewpoint. Microsoft is DRIVEN by the business world. If they can't integrate their Exchange/communication product line in with their phone, then they just waisted the last 7 years of development. Why do you think they've been working so hard on remote sync capability. You honestly think they would do all that work just to throw it away?

From the business world, there may be more iPhone, Blackberry, etc., but to TRULY have a unified communication environment, you HAVE to have a Microsoft Windows phone. I personally have sat in classes over the last 2 years where half the class was Lucent communications engineers learning how the Exchange and mobile phone products work in order to integrate their PBX systems and develop unified communication suite software to match.

The "big picture" is a LOT bigger then what the non-business mind can see.

what they showed us has exchange and every other business function included into what we saw demonstrated. the only thing that a business edition my have would be less hubs (ie the xbox live hub) or an additional looking business hub for all business products in one place but the overall look and ui isn't going to change at all and the functionality of the phone isn't going to change. So the only thing left to ask is what you mean by business customer? They didn't show how mobile office or excel works because there isn't anything new with that. the ui is new and that is what was shown off, but if you mean business where you think you can unlock and run custom ui's, or run custom roms, or decide where apps are loaded from, there isn't going to be any difference from business customer or regular consumer. At most there is going to be a business hub.

From what I originally read, there currently is no Exchange functionality in the product, but I may have missed that. I have only watched one video. I never intended to imply that there would be a different UI. Any more then there was in Windows Mobile Standard to Windows Mobile Professional. However, I could see them adding multitasking and other missing functionality for the business user back in for a Business/Pro version of the OS.

Personally I think 2 editions is dumb. Put everything in one and call it a day. Do something like SPB does and offer a specific UI based on how you want to use the phone, business vs personal. Lots of people here are complaining about what they "think" Mobile7 doesn't have based one what they've seen so far (too much speculation). All I'm saying is that there is a LOT more going on behind the scenes then what people give credit for. Whether everyone likes the direction Microsoft is taking not, you can't please everyone. I personally can't see Microsoft completely shutting down customization. And until I see the final product with everything removed, I refuse to believe that they will.

Here's hoping it's everything we thought it could be, and much more! Personally I love the UI. I've played with a ZuneHD and love the way they've done the interface. I would still like to see traditional access to a file explorer and other basic system level components.
