The Nexus One probably will land on a few carriers, but there is likley to be even heavier competition in the mobile market. It doesn't mean the end of Windows Mobile or Palm or any other paltform. As has been stated mobile computing is going to see huge increases in users in the coming years. If the market is going to be satisfied there are going to have to be a lot of suppliers for that market. Ther will be lots of fighting going on for marketshare, and Android is likely to take a nice chunk of it, but it is insane to count ANYONE out when the real battle hasn't even begun.

Walmart greeters will soon welcome you to a Nexus One with Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T 3G?

What you can see under "Network Technology" is that the handset supports the 3G frequencies of AT&T (850/1900 MHz) as well as SprintĀ“s and VerizonĀ“s (1xEV-DO).

The Nexus One was already confirmed to be going to Verizon. Sprint just happens to use the same EVDO as Verizon. Sprint is not set to carry this device.

Too bad Sprint won't activate 3rd party phones...

The iphone to me is not functional as a business device. It is a media device first and a phone second. I hate touch screens for typing.
Well considering the fact that more and more companies are picking up the iphone for use, i'd have to disagree. BTW, there is an app that pretty much lets you do anything you can do with microsoft office and the files are fully compatible. Again, i'm not trying to bash winmo but but the bottom line is they have just fallen too far behind technology wise to keep my interest. They basically tried to put lipstick on a pig for too long and now they're scrambling to have to try to catch up when they had such a big headstart on everyone else.

Having both, the ONLY advantage the tp2 has IMO is the fact that you can flash roms.. but considering out of the millions of these devices sold probably less than 10% even do that, its not a great selling point. The keyboard could be a plus, but even with my tp2 I almost never use the slideout keyboard especially after I got swype... and the on screen on the iphone works great for me.. not to mention speech to text.

The ONLY advantage? Uh, I would think slingbox, tethering, and multi tasking would be huge advantages for most people. Heck, just having the freedom to install whatever apps you want. And you don't have to "jail break" (or flash a ROM) a Windows Mobile phone to do any of those.

I know you've been hating on Windows Mobile on these forums for a while. It was only a matter of time before you got an iPhone. But I'm sure the honeymoon will wear out eventually and you'll most likely move on to Android.

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

I wont lie, I love seeing all of those apps, and knowing I can do almost anything with the phone, and many times i'll go to a site and see they have an app, and go... Man i'd like that on my phone.

HOWEVER... I am not going to pay for AT&T and the cost of service for the iPhone. Even if I could never use SERO anymore, I am sure I could get by with something else on Sprint and pay less then AT&T.

I personally dont use office at the moment and use OpenOffice. In fact, there was just a post that Blackberry is going to implement OpenOffice in the next BIS.

upcoming 3.0 update in March to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).
.
.
What's else will be new?
  • OpenOffice file support: presentations, text documents and spreadsheets

In the end, it is all preference. The problem I see is that WM is not really trying to get their name out there. You see TONS of Blackberry and Android commercials, but rarely do you see anything for Windows Mobile. I even see more Palm ones.

I am not sure i've seen an ad on TV about it. Not to mention that Sprint commercial with the Pre, Blackberry and... Forgot the 3rd phone. But it wasn't a WM phone.

IF WM 7 is going to be HOT, then they need to advertise the crap out of it. If not, they will never get back in the game.

The problem is that you see something on TV, get an idea about it, or how it works, and read about it, and man you want it. I can't say I saw that with the TP2. I just was waiting for it cause it was one of the only phones I could get with my plan.

I may have even been that much more interested if an ad was out at the time of the release showing all this cool WM stuff.

Maybe the problem is that there is nothing GREAT about it to tout that much over someone else until 7 is released. I don't know, but you cant sell devices when you dont market them that well.

And what will happen if tomorrow brings the end of the iPhone, and all of the sudden you can get it other places? For instance Verizon. OS usage is somewhat hampered by the fact that some platforms are not available on certain phone carriers. If we saw the iPhone on Sprint and Verizon, what do you think would happen to WM? Heck, maybe even Palm and RIM?

If Microsoft praised WM like it did Windows 7 when it came out, and still going strong, it might prove something. But then again, maybe they are saving it for WM 7.

And on a note of advertising.

I work at a Best Buy, and when you walk in the front door, there are mock phones up. I think 4 or 5. Last ones were Android phones. They just got replaced last week, and the blackberry 8530 is up. They are all blackberry phones when you walk in the door. Will there be a WM display next? NOPE, cause we dont carry any.

I cant tell you how many people see that display the first thing when they walk in. And they look at them and grab the dummy phone, and ask about the phones. NON WM that is, cause they never will see one.

And how can you want to gain market share when many people are buying phones out the door at Best Buy with no rebate?

Even sadder. I went to the Sprint store 3 weeks ago, and the TP2 was NOT on display. They said you can only get it online.

Even if it is not a Microsoft thing, it is a phone with their OS. And how can you sell it if you cant play with it?

Everyone else seems to market the hell out of their stuff but Microsoft in the phone world. We had droid stuff up at one point, and iPhone commercials were on TV nonstop, and RIM is still going strong at it.

Same here. Open Office is what I have been using for a while now. It still needs an Outlook replacement, but Word, Excel, and Power Point are definitely not needed anymore.

Your problem is you think you're speaking for most people when you arent. The average consumer doesnt do ANY of those things with their phone on the regular especially slingbox. I've ALREADY said numerous times I dont use it so why do you keep trying to use that as an example? And FYI i've already said I can multi-task, AND I can tether so please just give it up. I know you like winmo but really you're just embarassing yourself.

The average consuimer? LOL, the average consumer doesn't spend several hundred dollars on a smartphone either.

I would bet my life that if you take all of the people who own smartphones and ask if they would like to tether, watch a slingbox, multitask, and install whatever app you want without having to get approval from big brother- the vast majority of them will definitely want to do at least one of those things. Even you jail broke your phone to give you the ability to do some of those things, so don't pretend that nobody cares about it. Again- Windows Mobile does it all out of the box with no flashing (or jail breaking) required.

And yes, I know you multitask. You already said that. Too bad you had to jump through hoops jail breaking your phone in order to get that functionality. And too bad apple could kill that functionality at any m,oment- and likely will in their next update (as all of their updates in the past have done), causing you to go through it all over again assuming the community finds a way to jail break it again (which they probably will).

I'm not embarrasing myself man. I already know the deal with the iPhone.
