Varies by carrier I'm sure, but I just got a defective C key on my new TP2. I notified them two days after the fact, they setup the paperwork for the exchange, and it took them over a month to get in a replacement. I had cut the box to do the rebate and when I took it all into the store, they kept the new box with my old unit and left me with my old cut up box and old manual etc.

It should just be an even exchange, if you get that option. They would wanna know why you are exchanging it, and if it is a hardware issue or some kind of malfunction they'll probably exchange it. If they determine user error (like cracked screen, etc) then they'll probably make you use insurance. Just go into a store and see what your options are.

What is defective? If it's an obvious problem such as a keyboard issue or something like that you shouldn't have to worry.

I had to do an exchange with my wifes blackberry 2 weeks after we got it. No problems whatsoever with the rebate!
