Re: Sprint PPC6800 Sucessfully flashed to Metropcs

Can somebody please explain the steps and programs they used to get their Titan over to MetroPCS. Would really appreciate it. Contract up next month with Sprint and can't pass up on the great prices Metro has, but have fallen in love with my Mogul and don't want to give it up.

Re: Sprint PPC6800 Sucessfully flashed to Metropcs

It would be nice if somebody could make a full rom version to get your Sprint or Verizon phone on the MetroPCS network.

I used MetroPCS and their coverage is not really good but it would be fine as backup.

Re: Sprint PPC6800 Successfully flashed to Metropcs

Well, i'd argue that technically it's illegal to clone any cell phone, even your own.

I remember cloning being a huge issue because people would grab your info out of the air with special receivers... anyhow, it was illegal.

So, with doing this, I assume it's also illegal. It's like making a copy of your music CD. Sure, you bought, paid and own it, but it doesn't matter, it's still not allowed.

Unless it's done by the companies hands, I doub't any of what we do to our phones is legal :P

But don't let that stop you!

( or not ? )
Until now I didn't realize this mogul mod would require cloning.

From what I have read there appear to be relatively innocent and harmless methods and uses of mobile phone cloning, like what is being discussed here, and others forms of cloning that are extremely criminal in their nature and intent and do a great deal of harm - e.g. identity theft for the specific purpose of committing theft and fraud, malicious wiretapping, ripping off service, etc.

Laws are on the books to criminilize the latter, but in many cases the law does not distinguish between the two.

From the Wikipedia article on "phone cloning"
"Phone cloning is outlawed by the Wireless Telephone Protection Act of 1998, which prohibits:

knowingly using, producing, trafficking in, having control or custody of, or possessing hardware or software knowing that it has been configured to insert or modify telecommunication identifying information associated with or contained in a telecommunications instrument so that such instrument may be used to obtain telecommunications service without authorization.

The effectiveness of phone cloning is limited. Every mobile phone contains a radio fingerprint in its transmission signal which remains unique to that mobile despite changes to the phones Electronic Serial Number (ESN) or Mobile Identification Number (MIN.) Thus, cellular companies are often able to catch cloned phones when there are discrepancies between the fingerprint and the ESN or MIN."

Apparently it doesn't even matter whether you are using only one device on an account that you're paying for. In that sense you're not stealing service - but that's not relevant because apparently it is still illegal.

One online poster made the comparison that cloning or exchanging two phone's ESNs is the moral and legal equivalent of cloning or switching two car's VINs.

For several months MetroPCS has been offering a service called MetroFlash. There is a complete list of compatible phones available on the MetroPCS website http://www.metropcs.com/metroflash/Default.aspx. It is exactly the same list that appears on the http://houdinisoft.com website (when it is working) because Metro is apparently using the Houdini software to flash compatible phones. When phones are flashed by Metro they legally use the phone's existing ESN and put it on their network, which they were unwilling to do previously.

The MetroPCS compatible phones are mostly all CDMA dumb phones.*** [Maybe NOT - see below!!!]

MetroPCS personnel are unwilling and unable to flash smart phones onto their network because it's not even possible given the software system and procedures they are using. I suppose they could hack your phone, but that is extremely unlikely as it would put their job in jeopardy.

At best, MetroFlash unlocks the voice and text messaging features ONLY. Specifically MetroFlash does NOT enable any data services - including the mobile web browser, sending pictures to another phone number (MMS), or wireless modem capability - even though these features are normally fully enabled by MetroPCS on all their feature-compatible phones with ESNs native to their system. So even though you may be paying for these capabilities, you cannot use them on a MetroFlashed phone.

You might be able to restore and extend these capabilities if you can find procedures to modify these dumb phones. The custom ROMs and kitchens available here cannot be applied to the kinds of phones that Metro flashes. Please correct me if I am wrong about this. The type of firmware and ROM required to adapt these phones to Metro do not exist because the companies involved never engineered them to work together and also there is no easy way to make modifications without literally taking the phone apart and redesigning it. I guess if you're really creative, studied electrical engineering and computer science, have the right equipment and programmable chips, a soldering iron and very good eyes, you might be able to figure it out. But it would REALLY not be worth all the trouble. Even if you had access to all of Metro's programming codes and procedures.

It is only the HTC models and certain similar smartphones that have the user programmability, the cracks and rom kitchens and capabilities for modding and reprogramming that enable them to be brought onto Metro's S-L-O-W data network with many of their features intact, and even extended, but these are precisely the devices Metro is unwilling to legally flash onto their system.

Sounds like a catch 22 unless you go the cloning approach and are willing to accept the above risks and ethical issues. I have not yet made up my own mind and will be researching and reflecting on all this further.

Sorry in advance if I'm wrong about any of this. I doing my best to be accurate and helpful, not mislead.

Also we should probably not openly discuss specific methods of cloning ESNs on this forum. I know its interesting and perhaps useful to some, but threads have been shut down and locked for less. And it is probably unwise to go on record publicly about this type of hacking. Who knows who is reading this thread.

Best regards. Sorry if this the info has disappointed.

*** P.S. I just realized that I have not carefully reviewed the list of Houdini - MetroFlash compatible phones to see if there may actually BE any smart phones on the list. I had assumed not. At least one photo on the houdinisoft webpage suggests there may in fact be. So I might be quite wrong about that.

Would someone please review the list I've included below. Maybe there is a handset out there that is both LEGAL to flash onto the MetroPCS network, capable and moddable to our satisfaction!!!!

Note there are no HTC or even Nokia phones on the list (not even the Nokia models that used to be sold by MetroPCS like the 6265i which would need to be flashed if the phone is from another provider.

Samsung SCH-i830 is MetroPCS-friendly

Seems there's at least one PPC on this list that Metro says it will flash for you legally with no hassles at any store that offers the metroflash service.

It's an 3 year old Samsung model I never heard of before - SCH-i830 CDMA + GSM World Phone. Picture and reviews http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Sams...15-d_5396.html.

It's no Mogul or Touch or even Apache, no camera, not sure if it has wifi. ... but it IS legal flashed to Metro, and was reviewed reasonably well in late 2005. Anyone know how to mod a Samsung?

It also looks pretty sharp on this page http://www.valuesphere.com/intouchsm...msungi830.html - which says at least some models have wifi. Undoubtedly pretty cheap to buy used on the web.

Followed your link but didn't find anything on how to get my Mogul over to MetroPCS. Sorry if I missed it, I'm sort of a noob when it comes to some of this stuff but I read through everything and all I did was get more confused. Just wondering if the person who originally posted that they got their PPC-6800 working on Metro, could maybe share their exact steps/programs so we all can give it a shot.
